Ok, it seems the 2.7 motors have taken a lot of grief because of their troubles, but the '74 doesn't have the same issues.
How many middle year 911 owners aree on this board and how has your ownership experience been? Are there any good middle year 911 sites, groups, registry's out there? How about tips for upgrades on non S cars? Thanks PS: It's a drag they are referring to the attack on America as "911". |

Matt Holcomb's 2.7 Rebuild Diary - Where he's building up his 2.7 Carrera motor My 911 Website - My motor was built 3 times before it was right. 2,000kms separated each build, but the error was by the engine builder. Beyond that, there are a few postings in the archives, but the 2.7s have a reputation they don't really deserve. My motor has been through a lot at the cost of a poor mechanic who cut a lot of corners. Do the job right and do it once. It's running great now and hasn't given me a minute's worry. California cars are to blame with their hellishly hot thermal reactors and 5-blade fan. As a result, the ROW 911 2.7 cars have been unfairly labeled too. Good Luck! I agree. I've owned mine 18 years on a 1980 rebuild - which included removing the air pump and replacing the thermal reactor with a straight pipe - and it's still running strong. Use common sense with these cars and they are a bargain.

My '75 911S has 60,000 or so miles on it. Had the valves done earlier this year as the guides were worn - very typical on some 2.7s. The car is now fine. Covers many a long journey and is used everyday when I'm home. I think the 2.7s poor reputation comes from it living in hotter climates in the US with therm. reactors etc. In Europe they aren't seen as an inferior and lower value 911. In fact, the value would be comparable - if not more - to an early SC.
There's certainly a few people on the BBS who have 2.7s with high miles on with no problems - search on "911 2.7". The engines are harder to rebuild but, if you get a car that has a rebuild, been timeserted, etc. it's going to be fine. In fact it will probably be fine anyhow, if it's well and healthy when you look at it. Here's a 2.7 site: http://www.mindspring.com/~matthew.daniels/porsche/ Not been updated for ages, though.
