Anyone title an inop vehicle in CT w/o registering?

Seems CT DMV wants to register a car at the same time you transfer title. I bought a project car and want just to xfer the title to my name without getting plates etc. This was a breeze when I used to live in NY.

The car is insured with haggerty as under construction.

Any nutmeggers lend a hand? Naturally the DMV's phone line is busy 24/7

CT DMV says online no title is needed on cars over 20 years old.

I don't get that one.

Just drive to the DMV and ask.

Title and License Bureaus are separate entities in Ohio.

1st, you can do it by MAIL!!
2nd, you do not have to live in Vermont! [edit] You do NOT need a vermont address. You don't even have to have visited Vermont.
3rd, you do not need insurance!
4th, if you don't have a title and the car is 15 years or older, all you need is a bill of sale.

The downside is they will not accept your $50 bill of sale for a Ferrari. They go right to some kind of NADA type book and take the lowest listed price and expect that value x the tax rate as the tax payment. That's the vig for making it so easy.

In return, you get plates and transferrable registration that you can use to sell or get a title in your state if they do that sort of thing. All of this info is on the VT_DMV site. It's not a secret but they don't make it obvious.

I did a 1967 Mini from the UK that had NEVER been registered here as it sat in a barn for 25 years after importation. Smooth as butter even after I tried the $50 Bill of Sale trick. They just sent me a nice note telling me the value they were going to use (with a copy of the page with the value) and advised me to send a new check. 2 weeks later I get my stuff in the mail. I just renewed the registration for 2 years last week.

Maine is the place for trailers. 5 year registrations for $90 and no inspection. all done by mail or fax. CHEEP!!!!

I'm a cheep yankee and these tricks are well know among our types.....

Good luck.

Do you need a Vermont address for the title? I am surprised they would title a car in their state if it is not intended to be operated in that state.

Nope. They do not care. They use my NY address for everything. This is Vermont after all.....

Just to be 100% clear, you DO NOT get a title. They do not title cars 15 years or older, like may states. You do get a transferrable Registration, which one the registration is up, can be used to get a title in your state if they do that. You will not pay tax again as it has already been collected in VT.

They get the full tax and are happy to do it.

What happens when you sell the 'Vermont registered vehicle' to someone else? Would the prospective buyer be able to register this vehicle to his local state? Say like California or NJ? Interesting concept. Keep us posted. Thanks.

Yes. No issues as all states recognize each other's prices. Many many vehicles get transferable registrations; motorcycles, trailers, boats, etc.... It's not a concept, it's a fact and easily do-able.

The prior registration is all you need for transfer of title (that will be your title). The back half will need to be filled out by both the buyer and seller. Also get a blue bill of sale filled out. No titles in CT over 20 years I believe.

Bringing this back from the dead... does anyone know if this mechanism still exists in vermont?

also, does the registration process require or, is dependent at all on safety inspection.

thanks frank

It still is working and no inspection required. This is all done by mail.

You do not ever have to be in Vermont.
