Loud Squeak from Engine
Hi All; New to the site - it appears quite informative. I have a 911 1980SC Targa with 83K miles. I have owned it for 4 years and never had any problems with the car. One(somewhat) consistent problem has been a loud squeal/squeek eminating from the engine cpt. It occurs when the engine is taxed(high rpm's) or downshifting and upon the initial startup on cool mornings. Once the engine is warmed-it stops until it is downshifte aggressively. I have had the belt replaced and tightened and shimmed by two diff. shops. What gives? I have little confidence in the shop that replaced the belt and less confidence in the shop that 'shimmed' the belt the 2nd and 3rd time. I suspect the alternator but would'nt it have given out by now(4 years)? Thanks in advance.

try a new belt. make sure the pulleys are in the same plane and the tension is correct at the same time. sounds like you have lost some shims along the way.
edit....... a new belt will strech/grow a liitle after it is installed. readjust it after it breaks in. ps we won't mention the old bar of soap trick...

Agree with trying a new belt (verify it's the correct size) and be sure all the required shims are used (either between the pulley halves or under the nut) mine takes 6 shims total.
