915 trans

Good morning, I friend sold me a locked up 915 trans. At some point I will try and find out how to get it un-locked up. I believe its possibly the shift rods, or slider stuck between gears.

So, its not in pristine working order. While at it, I saw something of a Wevo (spelling) shifter and it install in the 915 trans. Is that shifter known for just correct shifts? Or correct shifts and short throw shifting?

Lastly, is it a must to have all of the trans jigs, in order to replace the possible defective parts, which caused the lock up in its present condition.

As always, it depends. You will know more if you first drain the fluid and see what is stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Bits and pieces means a big job awaits

Next, remove the shift cover after draining the fluid and with a bright light look at the syncronizer bands. Are they still there in one piece? How many dog teeth are missing?

This will be your first opportunity to see what is keeping it from rotating. Could be many things.

What caused it to stop turning in the first place?

The 915 trans, I bought in the seized condition. I plan to repair it, it's going into my beetle attached to a type IV engine.

Nice, thank you. I'll start with removing the drain plug, and hope. But, before I spend lot and lots of money getting the 915 back on the road. I may choose to just go 5 speed using the berg setup. Although the 915 is the better route.

Pull the 4 bolt inspection plate and check the selector inside to see all the access are lined up. One is probably out of sync with the others. Use a large screw driver to align the 3 individual selectors.

After you drain it, pull the side cover. Regardless of what you see through the inspection hole you want to know the condition of your ring and pinion and differential.

Why do you need a 915 in a Beetle (unless it's being powered by a very powerful, high torque engine)? A 901 box should easily suffice and would be much easier and cheaper to repair. 915 parts are $$$ and the used ones are often worn past their useful life.

I have a 902 trans, from what I have heard it's from a 912. Supposedly the ratios will be closer to what I will want. But with either,,901 or 902 the first gear is very weak. I have three bugs, and the one with the 2110 turbo, I will use the , 902 in. The one with the 2332 , I'll the 915 in, if I can salvage it.
