Slantnose?
every once in a while I see a slantnose. Not sure if I like them or not. Does anyone know the story on these (when offered, other differences from "normal" turbo, etc)
thanks |

I belive the factory started offering that option on the turbos in 1987 through the "Exclusif" or "Special Wishes" program. However there are probably 100x more non-factory (conversion) slant-nose cars out there. I personally don't care that much for the slant-nose look. It makes the 911 look too much like an RX-7.

Blackburn-Daly
Someone might know better, but when I was a teenager in the '80s I went by a place in Indy call Blackburn-Daly. Blackburn, to my recollection, was a Pcar guru; Daly is Derek Daly. They did all sorts of special 911/930 projects but concentrated on the Slantnose.
I remember there was also an article on them in Automoblie Magazine. It was a long time ago, but I remember watching them led in some rear quaters. I also remember something about the rake of the windshield being different. Something like how the Speedsters also had a more laid back angle to the windshield. Blackburn now is part owner of a pretty cool exotics place called Ooley & Blackburn. Steve Ooley is a pretty cool car nut. Maybe you could look them up and give them a call. On aethetics, sometimes I really like 'em. I also sometimes want to pull out the white sport jacket and pastel Tshirt w/boat shoes. All very '80s, very Sonny Crocket (damn I thought he was cool at that age ). I don't really like the boxed rockers though.

Ok, got me thinking so I called them. Full of ***** on the windshield thing, only for the speedster. The scoop is factory used all standard 911/930 parts. Then bolted on new fenders, kept same hood, put brake ducts in quarters, kept same tail, and bolted on boxed rockers.
So just a normal 930 with new fenders, rocker extensions, and brake ducts. Man now I have that stupid synthesizer theme song in head.

I AM FORMOST A PORSCHE FREAK, AND TOO MY THOUGHTS THE
SLANT NOSE CAR WAS THE COOLEST PORSCHE EVER MADE! MY 87 SLANT NOSE CAB HAS HAD MORE MONEY THROWN AT IT THAN ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE EVER SEEN. SENT BACK TO THE FACTORY ON A USP 747 CONVERTED TO SLANT THEN SENT BACK AND GARAGED EXCEPT FOR PERFECT DAYS IN FL. WHAT EVER REAL MONEY IS WORTH THESE DAYS I STILL PREFER OWNERSHIP OF THIS CAR. WHEN EVER YOU SEE A TURBO DON'T YOU THINK OF THE SLANT AS THE ULTIMATE ? EMAIL ME AND I'LL SEND YOU PICS OFF "THE" CAR kepperly@stanion.com |

Slant nose, memories of my mispent youth.....
I recall the slantnose was the hottest 911 in the early 80's. I was a student at the time, and like a salmon swimming up stream to spawn I did the annual spring break trek to Daytona beach. To those too young to remember, Daytona was THE spring break spot in the day. Anyway, Hawian tropic had the bikini contest girls there..... Somehow me and my friends ended up talking to the owner of Hawain tropic (it's all kinda blurry being spring break and all), I think his name is Ron Rice. Anyway he's got these hot babes crawling all over and he's telling us his story about getting the company started and mentions he has a Porsche. I'm thinking the guy drives a 928 or something. Next day we see him on the beach in the 911 (you can drive the beach in Daytona). It's a slant nose turbo with custom Hawian tropic paint scheme on it. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

From what I was told/read the factory made a very limited run of slant nose 911's. Unfortunately the "general" public loved them too and so tons of fakes were soon running the streets usually piloted by the gold chain, chuncky ring, speedo wearing crowd. Here's an original that's for sale in San Diego. It's been on the block for a while and has seen some dramatic price cuts. Personally I prefer the standard 911 nose over the slant but in person this is a beautiful car.

imho one of the essential design elements of the 911 is the light tunnels. Take away that (ie slantnose) and it isn't a 911.

Ouch Nostatic. I typically agree with you on most editorials. In fact we both drive silver SC's. Now I really do like looking out the tunnells on my SC. Just something cool about it. But not a 911? All of the factory turbo Daytona/LeMans great ones of the 70's/80's had that look. Weren't they the pinnicle of what our cars could become. Slantnose does have its place in the 911 liniage.
D-yeah it is unfortunate that most guys you see driving aftermarket slants seem to look like rejects from the Mr. T collection. I looked at your link, and it is very clean. But I have always though it was a shame to have super high performance cars with no roof. Why would you want the aerodynamics of the nose and then make it a cab?... Oh I forgot people buy for reasons other than function.

I thought the slant was the ultimate, especially the 934/935 look with the lights down low in the air dam like the endurance racers. Now I dont care for them, I really like the "light tunnels". The best is the narrow body RS look. Weird how things change as you get old (35+)

Never cared much for slantnose. Similar to the above, I like the buy-eye look over the RX7ish.
I do not mean to offend current slantnose owners. Remember, beauty is to the eye of the beholder. Can someone start a poll on this???????? |

well, without going too far down the slippery slope of purist talk, I think there are certain design elements that make a 911 a 911. Porsche has certainly seen fit to evolve (or devolve) the design over the years, but I think there would be a consensus that the light tunnels are a major visual cue. While the limited production cars certainly have their place in the history of the car, I think some were better executions that others (would you rather have an RS or a slantnose?)
As far as the race cars, in some ways that is another ballpark. They are much removed from a production car, and by design have many of the elements modified. In the quest to build the fastest machine, taste goes out the window. But of course taste is an individual thing...ymmv. I've just never really cared for the slantnose look. |

I'm not a big fan of the slant nose, I think it take's away the Flying Fist styling of the 911

IMHO...the slant is more boxy and less curvy. I love the curves of the 930.

I've got a combination--regular nose, factory boxed rockers. The rockers have grown on me, although I started out not liking them.
Slant noses, to me, are good eye candy for the first glance or two, but they don't wear as well as the classic look. |

I was working at dealer in '87 when they started selling them in the U.S. through special wishes dept., I think that the factory had been offering them for a while before that to European/Middle Eastern customers. They were hot *****e at the time and expensive. I liked them because they were outrageous and rare, but I don't think that they have stood the test of time very well, while stock 911s have. Driving one is a blast, however, total go-cart effect. Parallel parking is a snap in one of those.

I always thought that the slant-nose looked like the rx-7 as well .
The name slantnose doesn't seem quite right though. Its not the nose that slants, its the eyes so wouldn't that make it slant eyes Just a thought
