Red face Help -- T handle pull on rear lid cable broke off

Went to open rear deck lid to access engine. I pulled on cable release and t handle came loose. I tried to screw back on to thread of cable but thread won't catch as the tip is barely peeking out. Any suggestions on getting hood open ? Thanks !

Magnet to start it and needle nose pliers to grab whatever you can pull through?

Or some string and a dab of glue to pull the end out enough to grip with pliers...

If the cable has slipped back then I'm surprised that the lid hasn't opened as it is designed to open when the cable breaks; when fitting the cable has to be pre-tensioned so that's why it has retreated into the bodywork/cable sheath. What is stopping the cable from retreating further? Is it worth going for broke and trying to force it further into the sheath? At worst you need to remove the grille by sacrificing the plastic grille nuts.

The cable has not retreated fully. There is perhaps 1/8 inch protruding. As far as grille I have a whale tail. I'm considering trying to push the cable further in and see if that allows the lid to open.

Press down on the lid to get it to release its tension?
