Porsche Crest H4 LED bulbs from Super Bright LEDs

Anyone use the H4 LED Headlamp bulbs from Super Bright?

That are made by Cree and have Copper Braided Wire heat sinks. I would like to confirm they will fit our Bosch H4 headlamp assys.

Len

Hi Len,
I used them on my 928. They take up very little room, because of the way the wire connects off the side. The copper heat sinks are bendable, and should fit easily. They also don't get all that hot, maybe 140 degrees F. Love, the bulbs. Got mine on Amazon for $50. I already have a HID kit on my 911, or I would be installing these. Put them on my Isuzu Vehicross too.
Good luck,
Dave

yeah I have them on my 911, using H4s, and loved them so much I put them on my 928 as Dave did above.

Everything fits easily in the headlight bucket. This is a no-brainer and you'll love the output.

Or maybe a link to them? Searching for "super bright led h4" is not particularly helpful.

+1.

I ran HIDs in the Euro H4s and while it gave me much better lighting, it also scattered the light all over the place. I aimed them low and it still scattered so I removed them.

With the LED, there is no real "bulb" that projects into the housing, so I wonder what the beam pattern looks like.

Hi Jim...percentage wise, how much brighter than normal would you say your lights are?

Thanks!

I'll take a pic of the assembly this afternoon and post up.

These are good lights. Don't let another mans OCD about "scattering light everywhere????" dissuade you in any way. That doesn't even make sense and if it did it wouldn't change the fact you see more of the road when driving at night. A LOT more. And you don't have to run relays.

I disagree. If the light output is not controlled and aimed corrected every oncoming driver suffers.

I agree. His statement is patently ridiculous. My advice to people that would like to learn a little more about the installation of light bulbs into light assemblies they were not designed for (in case you've forgotten your high school physics) is to visit Daniel Stern's web site and read a little about what he has to say.

Some HID kits come with a reflector (or blocking shield) that blocks light from going downward from the bulb. I think this is so the reflector does not throw much light upward. See this video for what the shield looks like:

then goto the 7:30 minute mark in the video

I 'd say 100% times better. I am older now and night vision is going and it did not help I recently got Lasik Mono-vision ( can't be a pilot anymore ).

I can see so far down the road, it is amazing how I drove at night even with incandescent bulbs recommended by Daniel Stern. BTW, I do recommend all his brake/marker/turn signal bulbs, they are the absolute brightest, even tested against all the "bright" LEDs

Caveat, you must aim the HID's down by an inch as not to blind on coming traffic.

The incandescent is OSRAM Night Breakers Plus. It is the best standard bulbs with most complete light throw with little to no dead spots.

Yeaaaa.... OK.... well... Len, the OP, is asking about theses Cree Bulbs in his H4s.

Guess we have to always leave a little room for the Theorists vs the true hands on personal experience. You know, just like the Honda motor in McLaren right now. Pure theory build.

I have those bulbs, in my 911, with the H4 setups. Not H1s, not HIDs I dialed them in with the Stern info on his site. The output is beautiful, You can easily aim them not to blind people from being both behind them and coming at them against traffic. I did both with the help of my wife in her Lexus. Scatter with these are hardly existent and irrelevant unless you have some major OCD. Which isn't a fault. My entire car was built on my OCD issues. Buy these lights. You will like them.

here are the pics of the install. You have 2 main "new components" one is the big round thing on the back of the bulb. That's a fan. Then you have the silver square thing- that's the ballast. This pic is from my fender that is not currently attached to the car but that doesn't matter.

in terms of connections- the 3 prong is the 3 prong as usual. Then you have a round weather seal going to the ballast and 2 wire connector also going to the ballast. That's the power for the fan. I used 2 sided tape to hold the ballast in place on 2 of them and a single small sheet metal screw on the other 2 (again 2 cars worth) none of those methods came loose. It's as simple as it comes to install and you don't need the bigger relays like with the hotter H4 bulbs.

It really is a good light system for not a lot of money. I've had them on both cars for a year now. Had a problem once with a ballast going faulty on me. Contacted the Super Bright people and they sent me a replacement no charge, not even shipping. I shipped my faulty one back for $3.

Good luck. you will like these.

Robbie,
The fan seems to be somewhat exposed to the weather. How do you think it will hold up in extreme rainy weather? Just curious how well that section is built.

That's what the rubber sealing gasket around your headlight ring is supposed to prevent.
That, and the various pass through grommets for the wiring.

Though its never been an issue, and I do drive in the rain, it is a valid concern...

The fan does sit up off the floor of the bucket on the back of the bulb of course so unless you go into a huge deep puddle there could never be a reason for it to get wet.

A little bit of RTV where the wiring comes through the bucket grommets, and the hole for the horn/oil cooler mounting brackets would certainly make it water tight.

The main connection from the ballast to the fan/bulb is an o-ring weather right seal as well.

Shorter answer... Not likely to be a problem.

Sal,

I just re-read your question about how well built that center section is... I'll shoot a pic of the bulb and how the fan screws on. It is certainly solid. Literally. The bulb is pretty cool, there are no prongs...

Thanks for the pics and review. The current kit from superbrightleds uses braided heatsinks - no fan. Maybe other differences as well:
