Booster seat time?
So my guy is pushing 5, is pretty tall and weighs in around 45 lbs. With that said, I feel like I am just squishing him in the back seat of the 911 in a car seat. With that said, I also feel like being stuck in the back seems to be the most unsafe place in an already unsafe car.
I would really love to get him in a booster and get him tied in nice and tight up front with me. To all of you with kids, did you ever have to go down this road?

Maryland child safety seat laws require children under 8 to be in a safety seat unless they are 4'9" or taller. There is no requirement that they have to be in the rear.

Does a booster fall under "safety seat"?

Maryland DMV has a website covering this. They basically require harness equipped safety seats between ages 4 and 8 unless a booster seat places child in a position where car seat belts properly fit child; I.e., lap belt across upper thighs and shoulder belt draping shoulder. So my guess is your lanky little feller is not quite there yet.

The goal usually is to get the shoulder belt to sit properly across the chest/shoulder and not up on the neck. My kids are 7 and 9 and do not need boosters in the back for this. In fact my 9 year old is really itching to get up front and should be there soon without boosters. I'm assuming you have only lap belts in the rear in a 76? If so a booster in the front may be the safest way.
These kind are what I've use and are small enough to use in the "back seats" of a 911. Cosco Topside Booster Car Seat - Walmart.com

Yea, my kids take turns. The only good the rear seats are for is kids and they can't fit back there with a safty seat.

I had my son in the back seat of my 930 at age 6. I had shoulder belts installed for this one important reason. The rear seat is naturally such that it accommodates a youngster pretty well. In NY a booster is recommended until 4'9". My wife will require until age 49. Front seat is a different story all together.

Here's what I did a few years back. Put 5-point harnesses on both sides.
She's now a freshman in HS and he's a sophomore in college. Time flies, strap them in tight and enjoy every minute!

My son is 6 (but small for his age) and he rides in the front seat with a booster. His 3-year-old sister protests regularly. If the booster doesn't situate the seat belt safely on your son, you can get a full sized harness seat and secure that in the front. This will give him the protection of a proper seat and the comfort of having front seat legroom. My son rode in a Recaro 4-pt seat up front until this year when he moved to a booster. - Matt

My son is almost 6 years old and quite tall for his age, 51" tall I believe. My car has no rear seats unfortunately and is equipped with Recaro Pole Positions & 6 point harnesses only up front. The factory seatbelts are long gone. I can't put his booster seat in the Recaro, its too wide to fit. However If I just put a pillow under him the harnesses do fit quite nicely on him. I just don't know if this will land me a huge ticket if i'm ever pulled over for not having him in a proper seat restraint?

You know, i don't recall ever being in a safety seat when I was younger. I actually remember most everything I rode in only had a lap belt. Amazing how times change.
When I was 7 years old, my parents bought a brand new Chrysler Conquest. Their cool points went thru the roof in my eyes when they brought that car home. So you guys must be the coolest ever to have old Porsches! Good on ya for letting the tikes enjoy them with you!
