Driver's side mirror glass replacement, '85 3.2

1987 PORSCHE 928 Driver Side Mirror - 2814

Yeah, it says 928. But it fit the place where the old glass dropped out perfectly. I glued it in with a bit of this stuff:

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Marine-Adhesive-Sealant-05260/dp/B0000AY6B0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1443502708&sr=8-3&keywords=3m+marine+adhesive

Worked great, no hassles at all. Now, if I could have gotten a convex mirror with no "Objects in Mirror" writing, I would have been REALLY pleased.

Cool. They have passenger side too. In the 944 section, but 5 bucks more.

is this a good solution to my problem? Since I got the car this way and have no idea what parts are missing other than the glass...

Ayles -- your mirror's missing the backplate that the mirror fastens onto. The posters above all had the glass fall out of the backplate and can glue the mirror onto that plate. Yours looks to be missing the backplate (usually holds the defroster wires too) - Yours also don't look to be standard "flag" mirrors that came with our 911s from the factory -- do you know what car the mirrors came from?

I have earlier mirrors without the locking ring. On mine the heating element is part of the glass - is it separate from the glass in the later style (part of the "backplate" instead) or are these replacements un-heated?

Mr. Scott -- I believe you're referring to this -- Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-731-035-08-M100

I have the same ones on my '86 -- on mine, the glass (just the glass) fell out of the housing in the above part and there did not appear to be any wires/etc. left over -- I simply glued a new piece of glass into the assembly and SEEM to still have defrost functionality.

Huh, that part does look familiar... I remember taking my mirror out a couple of years ago to repair a break in the heating element but I don't remember glueing anything. I'll have to check!

This is the version I have. Seems like the backing plate version is an update to the early-style mirrors. The element on the originals is exposed and permanently attached to the glass as far as I can tell.

when my mirror fell off (and it literally fell off -- watched the glass start cantilevering out from the top once or twice and then fell and shattered at a stop sign) , everything behind it stayed in (i.e. the tabs were still in the mirror housing) -- only the glass and its reflective backing fell off -- so, given your photo above, it follows that the heating element is on the tabbed backing (with the plug)that remained behind and not in the glass itself.

Yup. That's what happened to me - the glass just fell out. The backing plate and everything else is still in there. I just glued new glass on.

For whatever reason, I can't upload pics to PP. and none of the staff care to help me figure out why.
