Replace Interior Rearview mirror
 

Does anyone know how to take off the rearview mirror. My day/night lever is broken. I have an '87 Carrera.

It is probably not broken, just dislodged. Stick a screw driver up the open and pop it back in.

If the lever itself is broken then it is toast.

If do not have it, get the $4-6 pick tool set of 4 from FLAPS or HB and use the straight pin tool to stick up the bracket to release the tin lock. then it will slip out. You to keep at it until it catches then if you are going to reuse the mirror make sure the tin is back in shape for a tight fit.

Use a rear view mirror removal tool and be very careful. This is an easy way to crack your windshield.

Break a Leg Brother!

Thanks for your help & photos, Draco & Fixer. Now I have some info to get started on resolving this issue.

I get more stressed doing this than installing the windshield b/c you can crack it so easily.

Again go really slow and i wanted to say use some lubricant, the next time i will.

After separating the ball from the socket pretty easily, I couldn’t get them back together with my bare hands. I used a zip tie and a piece of scrap wood to make a long handle for the ball joint piece. I put the glass part face down on a towel and was able to press down on the handle ends to pop the ball into the socket. After the two pieces were back together, I cut the zip tie off the ball joint.
