Front torsion bar question

I have an 81 SC that I just replaced one of the control arms bushings with polybronze bearings. I cleaned up everything and was very careful to put it together correctly, but when I went to put the torsion bar back in I felt it slip into the splines on the other end, but it seems to stick out on the cap end about 1/4 - 1/2'' further than the other and what it used to be. I cannot seem to get it to go in any further. It was more difficult to thread the height adjustment bolt into the cap because it was not lined up perfectly. Is this typical when this change is made? If not what could be causing this?

Thanks for any info

Yancey
