1973 Dash Face Material??

What is the original material used in an 1973 for the dash face? I bought my car about a year ago and I liked the "steel" look for the dash face which I thought was aftermarket. After some research, it appears that the dash face is the original aluminum that SHOULD have some material glued to it. I know in 72 it is the basket weave...

Anyone know what it should be for a 73 and where can I purchase the material?

Here are some pics...

The vinyl covering the metal is a smooth vinyl, not basket weave, and the same as used on the door panels and seats. You can probably by some remnant German vinyl of the correct color at a custom upholstery shop--I don't think our host or other suppliers offer just the strips for the dash. Someone may correct this, however.

BTW, by "smooth vinyl" I mean it's not a basket weave. There is a grain pattern to it, like on the dash top.

Here's a photo of a 73 dash face with the vinyl. This looks just like the dash on my 73.5, except for the color. It's a bit hard to see the grain, but if you enlarge the photo you may be able to see it. As Randy pointed out, wood was also available and you may have had that on your car.

I have learned from reading this board that it's risky to make an absolute statement about these cars as there were so many variations during production. However, I will say I don't believe the 72 had basket weave dash face as I have not see one in my limited experiences. In fact, I think 72 was the first year for the grained vinyl.

My 1973.5T has the original "fawn" grained vinyl cover on the dash and door panels. The knee pads and AC vents are black. If you look at the original 1973 sales brochure, you will see the "fawn" (much like a tan) and black grained dash and door panel covers. You can match these at any fabric store..............

Take a look at Ebay (Porsche 911 interiors) and occasionally you will see everything from whole glove boxes to door panels for sale. You can get an idea about material, glove box emblem and color..................or get a hold of the original sales brochure for your model and that will give you a better idea. I have seen many 1973 Sales Brochures on Ebay for sale.

Am I mistaken, but is there no material around the radio face plate?

mine came from the dealer with smooth vinyl in the channel inserts, but basketweave on the radio back plate. I replaced from the glove box to the steering wheel with one piece of garden-variety naugahyde. I think the long hoods were shipped without radios, and they were all installed at the dealers.

I realise this thread is old, but can anyone point me to a similar dash trim set that would fit a '76 911S with radio?

Im really struggling....
