YOUR OPINION Please?
I have an 82 SC im am restoring to mint. I have one HUGE problem however. I HATE the idea of spending $350 on a dash pad. A used one is out of the question. It will just crack again. I have the glass out of the car. I am considering a dash laminate kit from AUTODASH.com for $289. It is an 18 peice kit that cover s all the dash from head to toe. I am considering a carbon fiber look, brushed alluminum etc (100000 material choices). A: does anyone have one of these and how does it look/fit/hold up? B: is a standard dash cover even worth bothering with? C: where can i find a stock dash pad for cheap, OEM or aftermarket?

IMHO, if you are restoring to *mint*, then the obvious choice is to spend the bucks on an OEM dash. Why not get yours re-covered?
I think the carbon fiber stuff would look out of place on an SC, but it's you car ![]()

I agree with BB. If you are going for mint, then you should pony up the cash and go OEM. Carbon fiber would look too out of place, on a stock SC IMHO.

Have you tried MS Road and Race and the other host of Porsche dismantlers, btw?
(sorry if that $350 is from a dismantlers, btw) You could also try searching the Rennlist/Pelican/Panorama etc. classifieds, or going to swapmeets... be prepared to wait a *long* time.

My reference to "mint" does not mean STOCK. I intend to put sparco/corbeau seats in, bilstien HD, and misc dress and performance mods to includ port n polish, 964 cams, raised compression to and 17" 993 cup wheels. A stock dash is not something i will exclude..its just that its boring for the $$ and i wanted to know if there is any better ideas out there. Thanx for the response though fellas.

I think I have seen carbon dashes somewhere - here it is:
http://www.gt-racing.com/catalog/GTRpg1-8.htm See page 6. I've got no idea if it goes over your dash or goes in place of your dash. In fact, I don't even know if it is good quality or not!!!!

You should check with Pelican - I seem to remember that Wayne can get the GT Racing stuff (hopefully at an equivalent or cheaper price).

that front fender in GT racing is a fiberglass one
and I think almost everyone reading this post got confused with MINT...that means concours to most of us... I think you can get the old dash repaired and then covered in leather...I've seen a suede dash on a Modena 360 challenge...dark grey with red stiching...that looked awesome you could get a FG replacement and find an upholstry shop to do leather or suede the old race cars just covered the dash with perlon carpet to cut out the glare off the windshield CF is expensive and unless the guy making it is using an autoclave or a vacum it is the same thing as fiberglass...fiber +resin...so not worth it and there is always the dashpad cover that just glues on... good luck |

Whatever material you go for I would avoid anything the least bit reflective. (Brushed aluminum sounds like a terrible idea.)

I'm just a bit confused here.
Are you are talking about replacing the dash "pad"? The large piece on top? The 18 piece kit you are talking about from autodash.com looks to be one of those laminate kits for the dash face... the gauge area, glove box, heater control area etc. You've got knee pads on the bottom... Dash face in the middle... And the dash pad on top. Which one are you looking at replacing? Both?

Give Worldupholstry.com a try. If your dash is cracked, cover it, don't replace it. You can purchase a naugahide cover for half the cost of a new dash, plus you can purchase the whole dash kit which covers the bottom section.

The previous owner of my SC had the dash recovered in leather for $100. If you acquired the leather it would probably cost even less. It looks great. I can send a photo if you want.
