The new Panorama Cover blew my mind a little

This probably sounds self serving but it isn't. I don't want anyone to think I'm patting myself on the back. This is interesting to me and I wanted to share it.

The new cover of Pano with Abarth 356 Carrera engine lid blew me away when i saw it.

I had never seen these louvers up close before.

I recently had to figure out how to make my own louvers for my Stinger 912 project.

The Abarth cars were an influenced for me.

Looking at the Pano cover closely, I can see how they made their louver in the same way i had to..by hand not machine and by drill locating holes in the corners [to find the die location which is hidden by the sheet metal].

I thought mine looked weird in the corners but they actually look just like the Abarth louvers. [I need to do a lot of filing though still]

No offense but I've had louvers cut numerous times for Hot rods etc. and the ones you show look extremely rough...not well done.

If you are using that on a rough race car then it's ok....lots of racing vehicles had rough cut louvers done at the track during testing.

If you want a nice appearance check out your local Hot Rod crowd.....louvers usually run about 2 bucks per louver with a proper louver stamper. No tearing or holes.

I've never done anything but primer and paint after a proper job.

No offense taken..I think. Maybe later I'll take offense, who knows. The $2 comment kind of offends me. [I actually couldn't find anyone local to do this for me]

I'll be able to clean them up nice before I primer in about an hour I'd say.

The Abarth louvers are a touch rough too. Some are not bent as the others and the look is very much hand made. I can't post the Pano cover of course.

2 dollars a louver? And I remember when gas was just 35 cents. Last time I checked I was quoted 20 bucks each and that was on a flat chevy hood.

I went to the local So Cal Speed shop (called) and they gave me the name of 3 guys that do this professionally....2 bucks a punch. This was for my hot rod and they came out perfectly.
That is the place to look for louvers...hot rod connections.[IMG][/IMG]

I'm interested in your stinger 912. Got any pics? What is the premise - a hot rod 912? Sounds like it could be interesting.

I had this done 2 years ago...2 bucks a punch...where do you live Dubai? Regardless, if you want a pro job get a pro otherwise it looks it.

The guy that told you 20 bucks a punch saw you commin'. That would of been 1800 dollars to punch louvers lol...I paid 200 bucks and gave the guy a tip for doing it asap. Two years ago btw.

Reiver,

To my eyes, the hand made irregular appearance of the Abarth louvers are much prettier than your $2 stamps that have no soul.

They look too newly made to me to be on a 90 year old model A. I would rather they look like a guy or gal made them themselves in their garage.
Just for the satisfaction. Besides, I have the ability to use a file to clean them up. You won't think they look bad once painted.

To answer your politely asked question wdfifteen,

My 1968 Stinger 912 rear end was influenced by the Abarth Carreras. Only in using a lot of louvers and the central stinger exhaust.

I'm keeping it a 4 cylinder but not using a 912 motor. It will have better balance and the power.

I'm using a 10:1 compression, blueprinted 2.0L Type 4 motor taken out of a 914. Like the one featured in the previous Panorama. It's already built. It should make around 180 BHP and be very reliable[knock wood].

This is a light motor and Porsche had a hand in the 2.0L Type IV motor.
It's a very light, torquey, reliable motor. -200 lbs when all said and done [i'm told] over a flat six.

If I were building a hot rod 356 or 912 I would not use a 616 motor either. Parts are too expensive and the hp potential per dollar of VW based motors is much greater.

Just pokin some fun, they do look a little rough. With enough work, though, anything can be cleaned up.

The original E Type's were welded in this way [did i blow your mind a little?]

Right, and Porsche reworked the 2.0L Type IV for VW. You'd have to spend a lot[flat 6 money] to squeeze 140 HP out of a 616. I don't have the original 616 motor anyway or i would've used it.

My Type IV engine:
71 stroke, 96 bore,[2056cc] 10:1 compression
H beam rods, total seal rings, Web-cam(494), Scat lube a lobe lifters
JE lightweight wrist pins, Scat deep sump, 914 windage tray, Modified Berg
oil pump cover, Modified Berg achiever pulley, Jaycee pushrods, solid rocker
spacers, 1.7 rockers, chromoly rocker studs, dual valve springs and
retainers, Manley spring cups, 44mm intake valves, 38mm exhaust valves,
CB magnaspark ignition system, Treuhaft valve covers and intakes.

Well, call me a bit different, but I like the look of the hand done louvers of the OP. Not everything has to be dead nuts perfect every time. I'd call them well done, myself.

Arne, are you suckin' up to Fixer? We can have a tech session at your place and each person gets a different quarter panel to add their own hand done louvers to your baby.
