The big drop

yesterday I got alot done on the porsche.. after 2 weeks of prep and 1 week of rain the engine finally came out.
here's some pics of the engine pull
After pulling it out I got the whole MFI system off and the engine shroud off I got a good look at the mess those mice made. MAN it's a mess in there. Not 1 of the cylinders isn't blocked up with stuff. The other trouble that I had was that the throttle bodies were stuck. I was able to free up most of them though they're still really really stiff. I think I also bent one of the MFI linkages, does our great host sell them? (I'll post pics of that linkage later today)
you can see in one of the pics the standing water that's in cylinder #4

And just *where* are you dragging that motor off to, Tim?
Or are you using it to rake up the leaves, perhaps?

Thanks Wayne!
This is the strangest car I've ever seen. and yep that's a cat.. an oil filled cat. I removed it last night and about a quart of oil drained out of it and the cross over pipe.

and I'll return the socks when I'm done

Ohhhh Tim...
Proceed as you will but I retract my earlier statement about "maybe" tearing this engine down- at this point it is an absolute must. You can't have standing water sitting in cast iron cylinders for any length of time...and an oil-filled cat is an indicator of something amiss.

Is there a post already on the background of this car? I'd love to know more about it. Looks pretty cool.

Cheers

there's a couple of posts about it. "the nest"," back and good news" are the major ones. It's a '73 porsche that I bought from my uncle for a grand. It was sold to me knowing that it didn't run and that he had supposedly overfilled the oil and blew a seal. It then sat for about 18 months since he didn't want to fix it. Now that his son is turning 15 he wanted to get rid of it. So a friend of mine, my dad and I went up to WI where he had it and towed it back here to NC.
After starting to work on it I noticed alot of strange stuff about it. The engine's not original (we knew about that), the exhaust is off of a '75 or later car(cat and all), the front spoiler is a fiberglass repoduction of a RS spoiler, a carrera oil cooler, short shift kit. It's a real mess/ hodgepodge of parts, but for the price I can afford to throw some money at it.

Do you have any clue how you could end up with oil like that in the exhaust?

Tim,
Oil can seep past the exhaust valves and drip into the exhaust- but one would not typically expect that much oil. My exhaust did the same thing though- burped all over zuffenhausen's new boots while he was standing ready with a fire extinguisher.

Here's a contrast though- zuff recently rebuilt the top end of a '78 turbo and in doing, put on a used exhaust system he got from our local wrench. We had awful smoking problems with the new engine, and a mysterious drip as well. All troubleshooting failed, and we were sure something was wrong, not to mention that the rings had failed to seat. It turned out that the exhaust he got was full of oil. Unbolted it, poured it out, thoroughly degreased it, and all problems solved.

I'm actually on my way out the door this minute to go get my engine parts at Speedwerks' new shop in Thomasville NC- they just bought Bobby Labonte's old NASCAR shop off old I-85. Give me a call, maybe we can meet up. I'd love to check out your car.

Dave

I can't today. I work til 5 and then I've got class until 9. If your coming by this way some other time you're welcome to stop by. My car is at home home (Gibsonville). If you're coming to the carolina drive that'd be the perfect time to see it since home home is just off the highway.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna do right now, that was alot of oil to come out of that exhaust and the car ran 2 years ago.. would that much oil leak past the valve guides?

I'm home- got my goodies! The good news for you is there's a Porsche machine work specialist just up the road from you in Thomasville.

At this point that standing water in the cylinders negates what condition the engine was in two years ago- it's *****ed now. T cylinders are 100% cast iron- you've got stuck rings and rusty cylinder walls for sure. Give me a call sometime, I'm happy to help in any way I can. I'm heading out to the coast tonight for the rest of the week, but we should hook up some time. Got your PM.

Well I guess the Risoline thread over at Rennlist might come in handy here - that is gonna be one stuck set of P&Cs!

Or Coca Cola. That stuff will dislodge anything...

I've turned over the engine so it's not seized. I only turned it about 10 degrees and it was by accident but it was enough to make me belive it's not siezed. The valve that the water's in is a closed intake valve. In the cylinders that are open the spark plugs are rusty. Any Idea's?

Hey,

Nice to find some neighbors in the same boat.

I'm just down the road in Southern Pines.

I just picked up a 70 911 t in Cary a few weeks back. Abandoned paint job project. Sat outside for a while, got some surface rust. Looks like under 100k miles. Carbs are off, but someone at least put some plastic over the motor. Turns over fine, changed the oil, bolting on new carbs now. Plugs look like new, no rust.

As soon as my new ignition switch arrives, I'm gonna fire it up and see what I've got.

Hope to meet up with you guys sometime.

sounds like you're in better shape than I. I've got all sorts of mess with mine. Post some pics and the story behind it. We'd love to hear it.

Well, lets see.

Friend of mine knew I'm a 911 junkie and needed another one, tell me one day, "we saw a 911 the other day on a guys lot". Took me a few weeks to get up and see it, but when I did, found lots of good stuff about the project.

Never hit, floors with no holes, rockers in good shape, fuchs still there, ect...

Bad stuff we found, no carbs, exhaust has a hole in one header, tanks support needs to be replaced, surface rust....

It was late in the evening, so I took down the number of the lot it was on, call the guy the next day. Got the story on the car, paint job project gone bad, blah blah blah. Gave me a price I couldn't refuse (C-H-E-A-P), my favorite price. Figured, if I find anything really bad, I can get my money back out parting it out.

Brought it home, to the suprise of my wife (she started talking to me again after 2 days).

Cleared all the crap and leaves off the top of the motor, luckily there was plastic on top. Found all the nuts and bolts from the carbs, and the linkage (sweet). Poked a flash light down the intakes, nothing bad inside, so I gave the fan a little tug and it moved, so I kept turning. Turns over pretty well, no hard spots, but still has some compression. Pulled a few plugs and they looked great, no rust. Did a leak down test and found leakage from the rings. I'm hoping they are just stuck a little and will free up.

So I go on the hunt for carbs. Started looking for reasonable cost webbers (BUWAHAHAHAHAHA!) on ebay, crap was selling for more than I paid for the car, so I switch to zeniths. Put the word out on the forums looking for a pair and got hooked up with a great set, ready to bolt on, for a great price.

Got a few more goodies on the way from more forum buddies, got no keys with the car (did get a good title though) so the ignition is getting changed. As soon as the switch arrives, I'm bolting up the carbs, putting in some gas and seeing how/if it runs.

Backup plan is, if the motor is toast, I have a 2056 t4 motor I can run till I get a 6cyl in one piece.

Got to attack the rust, so far just limited to the surface and the tank pan. Pan is easy, surface I have to take off and neutralize so it doesn't come back. At least its out of the rain now.

I'd like to leave the interior pretty plain, go with an RS look. Exterior will be yellow to match the Screamin-yellow 911s I had a few years back. I'm also looking to install a sunroof section, always wanted a sunroof car. We'll just see how it goes.

Lets see if I can attach a few pics.

guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

But if you check out my web page, you can see what was done with the 74 beetle I'm playing with right now.

http://members.rennlist.com/screamin_yellow/74rest.htm

Maybe I can drive the 911 in the summer.
