removing heat exchangers?

the heat exchanges on my 73 T are a little strange. They're post 75 vintage, but whoever replaced the originals replaces the hex nuts with regular nuts. The 13mm socket that fits the nuts doesn't fit through the access holes running through the exchanger. Any idea on how to get at them? A box end wrench is really awkward. (sp?)

use a 1/4 drive 13mm flex head socket. Works like a charm

hmm.. I'm not familiar with a flex head socket, what exactly is it? I was using a 1/4" drive and it still wasn't fitting.

edit: is that a universal joint socket? if so I don't think that'll work. the 13mm socket I've got doesn't fit through the hole in the heat exchanger

A flex head is a socket with a universal built in. Snap On makes the smallest (dimension wise) but craftsman is pretty close. If you are unable to get through the tubes the flex head will allow you to go in from the side. I used one of these when putting my SSI's on. Actually I have just about a complete set because it made life real easy when doing my engine rebuild.

I'll have to go pick one up. The problem I have is the socket itself is too big. but the flex socket should work just fine. btw I think I was using task force tools so they're decent but not the best by far. the rachet has too much play for me but the sockets fit nice and tight.

If you are pulling the exhaust to replace it you might consider cutting off the heater boxes. I was forced to do this on my SC and while messy it wasnt too bad. Once off you should be able to get anything in there to remove the nuts.

I'm not looking to replace them right now but sometime down the road. Right now I need them off so that I can remove the mice's nest that's cloged up my cooling fins

I tried the flex head (craftsman) and it didn't seem to work. It was too big to fit in the tube and too long to go around. Any other idea's?
