used 3.2 stored for 6 years?
I have a used 87 3.2 that is, I hope, going into my 73 911. It has 42,000 miles on it. I have not turned it over since I bought it 7 years ago. I was hoping to not open up the engine. What should I do.

Why did you wait so long? Well, if the engine is sitting outside and not pickled, then you may have to open it up. If it was pickled, and you can turn it over by hand, and the valves are not frozen, or rusted, then maybe you just lucked out.
If it were my engine, I would open it up at least for a valve job. But, that is just me. |

If you do start it squirt some marvel mystery oil in the spark plug holes first and pull the coil wire till oil pressure builds for a few seconds, Kevin

If it was stored indoors away from moisture, you might be lucky and have no problems at all. If motor is on the floor, I would tip it on one side, left or right, and squirt some mystery oil in plug holes that are on top. Let it sit for at least 24 hours, (a shot glass in each cylinder is more than enough), then flip it over and do other side. Do this before you attempt to turn motor over at all, gravity will make mystery oil seep past rings and free them if any are sticking, after marinating for a couple of days turn motor over by hand w/ plugs still out several times. If every thing feels fine at this point, (even, light resistance), install motor and turn over w/ starter several times w/ coil and fuel pump relay disconnected to circulate oil and build oil pressure, then connect everything and fire it up! With 42k miles, I'm betting that you will have a great motor. Good luck!

motor
i had experience with an older mb straight 6 that sat for over 10 years outside. i would have used marvel but i used wd40 and sprayed it into the cylinders via the spark plug hole. i let it set for a day and then turned the engine by hand (with a wrench) without any spark plugs. i turned the engine at least 50 times and i sprayed wd-40 as i did. the upshot was when i finally installed the motor. i turned on the ignition (i replaced the spark plugs and put on new wires) and when i pushed the button on the dash for the starter (it was a 58 220s) the motor started immediately. i ran the motor for a while to blow out the wd 40 and as far as i know the car would still be running if the body would have held out. that was 20+ ago.
hope it helps, let us know how it turns out i think that you will be ok. gary

Mmmmm. Marvel Mystery Oil is good stuff! Just don't put too much in as you can hydrolock the engine and do some damage if you try to start it. I'd think a shot glass full is more than enough. Also, the cams and rockers can wear heavily without lubrication and I imagine they've lost their oil film by now. I'd pop off the valve covers and put some oil directly on the cam lobes and into the oiling hole of the rocker arms. Let it soak for a day or two, then turn it over by hand a couple of times to make sure it's turning free before trying to start it.
Good luck! -zuff |

Thanks for the help. I have some time before the car will be ready, 6 months if I'm lucky. Great forum!

I would use Kroll by Kano labs in Nashville, it is the best rust buster I know of. I would pull the valve covers, spray everything down, inc. the cylinders, wait a day or three, turn it to the other side, repeat. Then I would check the head studs and most importantly, I would pull the intake and engine cover off and clean the heck out of it. These engines always get rodents or dirt dobbers in side of them unless hermetically sealed. I would clean it up, clean and lube all of the intake stuff, put new gaskets in and seal her up. turn it over by hand making sure engine rotation is correct. heck, I'd even put a voltage regulator in it to be safe. Kroll will get past the rings easier than anything else and not puddle as much. www.kanolabs.com
They may have some stuff that is just for freeing up old engines. Good luck!

Agree w/ zuff, a full shot glass would be too much. Use maybe a half S.G. on each cylinder, as long as you put motor on its side gravity will do the trick and most if not all should seep past the rings in a day or so.
