broken/cut clutch helper spring?

hi everyone. ever since i got my car the clutch has been very heavy, ie. quite a lot of pressure is needed to push it in. I always just thought this was a Porsche thing until i jumped in a friend's 911, also an '82 SC, and found his clutch much easier to use.
long story short, i figured out this isn't how my helper spring should look.
It could just be broken, but it looks to me as if both inside pieces have been cut intentionally. is that something that people do? or is there any reason you could think for doing it?
i'm pretty keen to replace it, but not if it's supposed to be like that for whatever reason.

Its broken - that's where they start to crack. Mine was exactly the same except the end bit hadn't fallen out - yet.
Its an easy fix once you get the old spring out. Have a good look at how it works before you start, as some people install them backwards.
