Rich & Skip's Excellent Adventure 5.0
It's been 4 years since the last Excellent Adventure and high time for another one. After only 2 tries, last week I talked Skip into taking a weekday off work for a blast up the North Cascades. I know it seems like we keep doing the same adventure over and over, but there's a method to our madness…the North Cascades are amazing. There is simply too much to see and too many roads to experience in a single day.
We started out at 7am in Arlington, blasted up Hwy 530, and made the usual photo-op stop just outside of Darrington. Somewhat foggy start… ![]() Up the road with a scenic farm and Whitehorse Mt. in the background… ![]() Down the road… ![]() Skip… ![]() Skip said he had found a new road to try so we headed up to Suiattle River Rd... ![]() Suiattle River Rd was insane. It's a twisty, deserted 2 lane road through the woods that we literally had all to ourselves for maybe 20 miles until it turned into dirt. If you are up that way, do not miss it. Suiattle River Rd… ![]() Weird, way over-constructed bridge at the end of the pavement… ![]() Artsy bridgy shot… ![]() Skip on a sign (not real snow)… ![]()

From there, we headed to Diablo Dam which, I believe, is one of the very few dams you can still drive across.
Dry side of the dam... ![]() Dam Porsches… ![]() We kept driving around Diablo Lake, parked, and walked to the The North Cascades Institute, which I never knew existed despite having been to it's parking lot 5 times. It's a bunch of pretty expensive looking, blend into nature-ish, buildings stuck out in the woods. Apparently they have a fair sized budget. One of their pretty expensive looking canoes moored to their pretty expensive looking dock… ![]() Pretty expensive looking bronze of a pair of eagles at the Institute… ![]() When we got there, we parked at the end of the row, away from other vehicles. While we were gone 2 school busses vomited a bunch of fully packed kids. Right behind me…really? ![]() After relocating the children, we drove up to the Diablo Lake Lookout. The lake is down about 12 feet for some kind of shoreline work. Diablo Lake… ![]() Very cool, very big avalanche chute cross the valley… ![]()

Back down the hill to a camp ground.
Us, parked at what is normally a boat launch on what is normally a lake… ![]() We went back down the hill to see if the town of Diablo is really as weird as we remember from a previous Excellent Adventure. Yep… ![]() Skip said he had heard they were tearing down the town and letting it go back to nature. Diablo is a Seattle City Light company town that houses workers at the dam. It's been around since the 1930's. When we were there, workers were tearing up the streets for some reason. We still didn't see a single resident. Parked in a lovely spot down by the river in Diablo… ![]() We did another blast down a deserted Hwy 20 to Marblemount and stopped for lunch at the Mondo Restaurant. Good food and a great beer selection. I had a Fremont IPA and halibut and chips. Fremont IPA in Marblemount! Sure sign of a good place to be… ![]() From there, we did a convoluted route down Hwy 530 and back up to Hwy 20 which took us to Sedro Wooley where we turned onto Hwy 9 for a fairly sedate drive home. We did make one more stop for some non-ethanol gas in Arlington. View of Mt. Baker on backroad to Sedro Wooley… ![]() It was another epic Excellent Adventure! For previous excellent adventures… Targas and Coupes do get along! Rich & Skip's (and Aaron's) Excellent Adventure Part Deux Rich & Skip's Excellent Adventure III Rich & Skip's Excellent Adventure IV And a bonus feature… Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon… Okay, that's Skip's cue to add more pictures…and correct any "facts" I may have gotten wrong.

Thanks Rich, you really made my morning. You have a gracious way of making people feel like they are a part of your life.

Diablo was born weird and cannot be un-weirded.
Nice run Rich, I had a rather large grin for much of it! Here's a video to help explain the grin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIAHpmnyBZk And some photos too. Suiattle romp ![]() ![]()

This is a most awesome picture!
Rich and Skip, Thanks for sharing a great Fall Day on the road. Once it finally gets out of the 90s here in TX I will be doing the same. Granted, we do not have leaves, or shade or any of the other great Fall-only visual effects. But, we do have some fun roads.

I'm sure it got decidedly weirder when you two yahoos arrived..................or maybe the difference was not so noticeable.................

Hey guys - greetings from the UK, lovely pictures from your drive - I love mountains (keen winter sports enthusiast) so nice to see some different ones. Those deserted roads and towns sure are spooky!
