Alternator Pulley Bolt

Before I strain my guts out any further--is the nut on the alternator/fan pulley threaded normally? I mean, it isn't a reverse-thread or anything is it? I've been struggling with the socket wrench and spanner tool for 5 minutes and suddenly got paranoid that maybe I was tightening it.

Yes, comes off on a regular thread. Use the pin holder in your tool bag to hold the outer half.

Once you use the tool to hold the pulley, it comes right off.

Be careful about messing that one up. Last time I tried to get one it was hard as hell to find. That was quite a long time ago. Hopefully the situation has changed.

If it's really stuck, put an air wrench on it - it'll come right off. If you don't have one, anyways station can help you.

I ended up in one of those situations where you know something is about to go really bad.

I had my right foot holding down the Porsche wrench, was steadying a breaker bar socket with my left hand and pounding on it with a small sledge hammer with my right hand.

After about 5 hits, it finally broke free, but I was sure I was going to miss, smack my hand, my right foot would slip of the wrench, and I'd fall back and hit my head on the toolbox like a Three Stooges episode.

It's sometimes hard to get leverage while holding that pulley tool.
I would have gotten a helper to hold the tool, while you used both hands to yank on the wrench.

I used an electric impact wrench. It worked, and it was cheap.

That bolt is the reason I carry an 18" length of 1/2" copper pipe in the trunk. If you're on the side of the road, you'll need it to slip over your wrench to give you added torque. A must-carry item to keep with your tool bag...

That's a pretty smart idea, jlex. I'm going to keep the breaker bar in my trunk. My car didn't come with a tool kit, so I'm trying together the critical tools I would need. So far, I have a jackpad, a 10mm wrench, 13mm wrench, the breaker bar and 24 mm socket, and the pulley wrench and spare belts.

Those are just things I can remember that I've used a lot. Does anyone else have any suggestions for critical tools to keep in the car?

one of those flashlights that goes on your head .. I figured that one out after trying to change my belt in the dark on a country road . and trying to find a place to prop the flashlight, which subsequently fell and broke.

It was a long night...

Lots of choices for a cheap headlamp on Ebay

It seems odd to need a breaker bar on the fan nut.
Now I wonder if I am not tightening mine enough....
