New High Torque Starter...sounds funny to me
Just installed the High Torque Starter I bought here at PP. Installation was easy enough but when I went to crank the motor over, I got this high pitched sound which to me sounded a little odd. Is this just the way the starter motor sounds or did i get a bad one? Everything turns over fine and car starts, etc..

It is a high torque dingus because of the gearing and that will sound different...higher whine.

Yup.....normal for the high torque. You'll get used to it.

Even as a certified weight freak at 2174 lb, I had to take mine out after a month and put the Bosch back in. It just sounded wrong. I stopped going to Taco Bell to help compensate for the original one.

They sound like a Dodge, a Japanese, or high CR drag car. I like the way it sounds. Sounds racecar!

Ok, so you really care how your starter sounds?
It is lighter, uses less electrical juice, takes up half the space, starts the car.

I did one on my Alfa GTV, and it sounds like I'm starting an American big block. Definitely a different sound, but worth it for the benefits.

sounds different, but does the job and is significantly smaller and lighter

The main thing I noticed with mine was that my SC fires instantly now, as opposed to the old Bosch unit, which needed a rotation or so to fire (same battery).

as long as it works I'm not too terribly concerned about the sound. I was just making sure that the higher pitched whine is normal for this starter. It is lighter. I had to fab up a way to connect the two harness wires to the single post. And I had to re-route the hot wire to make up for the distance. The only challenge was getting the wires bolted on the TOP of the starter. Other than that, it was a very easy install as I had the motor out for a tranny swap
![]() thanks for the input!

Definitely a different sound but as long as it starts the car I guess it's doing it's job. I'm glad this was posted as I have to do my car soon....I don't think the sound will make we not want the lighter weight hi-torque starter.

The original starter takes almost a second to fire the engine compared to the high torque version which does it 3-4 times faster in my estimation. If the DME fires the engine after a fixed number of revolutions, that means a higher starting rpm. Not an issue on frequently driven cars, but could the quicker start have any effect on engine oiling and start up wear ? |

Should sound like a Chrysler product. They've used torque-reduction starters for quite awhile.
