Shavings in Oil

Hello,

I drained the oil on a 2.4T engine I recently purchased (been sitting for 5+ years) and found some interesting bits in the oil.

The shavings on the left are non-ferrous, and I am suspecting timing chain ramp material. Any other possibilities? They appear non-metallic. I pulled the two black ramps in the chain housing so far, and I did not notice any material missing, but the shavings look like they may be from the brown ramp.

The piece on the right is ferrous, but I can't think of any internal part that looks like that. Since the oil drain pan was sitting under my engine (engine is on a stand) when I removed the induction and exhaust, it is possible that this mystery piece was just sitting on top of the engine and fell into the pan when I flipped it over. Does it look familiar to anyone?

That is a piece of a zipper. Not a car part. I am pretty sure about that.

I agree, that does look like fragments of zipper. Definitely not chain rail, and nothing else naturally (as opposed to falling into) occurring in the engine is that sort of material.

The funny thing is the 2.4 isn't supposed to have a zipper....supposed to have Velcro. LOL. Good spotting on DD's part....certainly looks like a zipper component to me. Cheers

A zipper, huh? Hmm, I was planning on doing only a top end rebuild on this engine, but even though that part not something from an internal engine component, from what I am discovering the more I tear into this engine, I think I'll just go ahead and split the case so that I won't have to wonder what's lurking inside.

Thanks,
Frank

Someone not too long ago asked about the costs associated with splitting a mag case. It's pretty $pendy to do so. It's kinda like pushing your stack of chips into the table and saying "All in."

Since you have already drained the oil, I suggest you get an oil analysis once you put 1500-2000 miles on the new oil. You won't have to drain the oil if you use our bellows bottle to suck the sample from the oil filler tube. While is appears nothing internal is in the photos, it would be nice to get a baseline oil analysis report once you have some miles on the new oil, especially since this 911 is new to you.. youroil.net - LarryT 74 911
PS:, the reason I said to test the new oil is because once oil is drained into some container other than the new bottle we provide it is considered contaminated and the results will be questionable. Good luck!
