I need to replace the engine wiring harness on my '84 Carrera. Advice from the brain

Hi folks. The engine wiring harness on my '84 Carrera needs to be replaced. Mine's trashed (TRASHED!) where the cable and wires attach to the alternator. Melted and burned through. So, it's time to just replace the whole thing with a new one. However, I've looked all over this forum for hours for a thread detailing the removal and replacement of the harness, to no avail. Can anybody point me in the right direction, please? Hints, tips would be greatly appreciated from those in the know.

3.2 wiring harness

- the wrecking yards usually cut them so they can pull out the 2 "halves" - if that is a clue

have you priced that new one yet?

p.s. - i have bought 2 of them used in the last 6 yrs - one (from FL wrecker) was cut "short" with the ends craftily taped back on to look like it was intact - no continuity end-to-end

and the other (sold to me by a "reputable" Porsche independent shop in SoCal SF Valley) - said to be "refurbished" - the connectors on that one were also cut off & taped back on - but no continuity end-to-end

neither was usable as purchased  & it took me lots of hours to make 'em right, which included having to hunt down several of the special Bosch connectors

- not regular shelf items, so that meant looking for old VW & Mercedes pieces at pik'n'pull

I believe Timmy2 (on Pelican) makes some.

I removed my harness from my 77 project. I ended up cutting it so I could keep the fuse block attached. Took tons of pics before cutting it.

Timmy2 can make you one.

See this thread here too. Some outfit in Europe is making custom harnesses.

Yep. He does. I've already contacted him to build a new one. He does outstanding work. I've simply not wanted to bug him about R&R at this point.

I'm not afraid of tough jobs. I just want to make sure I do it right.

Tdw28210, can you direct me to your thread?

I have no thread on the '77 build. : (. Too damn tired to document it. FYI, my car was stripped down for sandblasting on a rotisserie. I did the stripping. If I recall, I cut the harness 3 or so feet back from the block. I am not sure if I will end up reusing it or not. I've got a 3.2 sitting in my '85 targa test bed that I will be dropping in it. Might just get Timmy2 to make me one. WTH, budget is already toasted. I just spent $600 for boring gray primer and hardener (Glasurit). Yikes.

Knot,

If you want to remove the whole DME wire harness without cutting the wires, you have to pull them back inside the cabin. Look for the rubber grommet by the firewall (inside cabin) and pry it out. Disconnect all connections from the engine and carefully pull the harness towards the cabin. Installation is the opposite of how you took the DME harness out. Try to save the old DME harness and might find some use for it. You need to disconnect the main wire connector from the DME box under the driver seat.
