Loud Windshield Wiper Squeal

Regarding my 1988 Carrera 3.2 Targa G50...turned on windshield wipers for first time since buying the car. Why I didn't earlier, who knows, but anyway, they make a horrible squealing noise when running. I've confirmed it's not just the blades on glass. I suspect it's either the linkage or motor, but before I went to the trouble to remove the fresh air blower, I thought I'd check and see if anyone else has experienced this? Any simple suggestions to fix, or do I need to just roll up my sleeves and get after it. Thanks.

Rust for not using it??? May need to remove fresh air vent system to get full access to lube the joints. If that does not fix it the motors may need servicing or replacement.

Before you start pulling large pieces, check to see if the problem could be in the two shaft bearings.
Pull the wiper arms and work on getting peneterant or light oil to run down the arm posts and into
the bearings. Rob

Too late! After sleeping on it I dove in and removed the wiper assembly. As Edd China would say, "That's a fiddly job". But not impossible. Bentley manual is a must. Anyway, I have pretty much determined that the issue is not the linkage. It's in like new condition, we'll lubed, and smooth as silk. Next I would like to check the motor. Is it OK to test run the motor disconnected? I'm worried about over-amping it or damaging it by running with no load. If it is OK to test, I'm thinking I want to test on the lowest setting, which based on the wiring diagram I'm guessing is the green lead. Any advice would be appreciated. John

I think you will be fine, just a short burst of 12 volts. This is how I tested the heater motor and AC fan motors. If you are insecure try a 9 volt battery.

Ok thanks much. I do think trying a lesser voltage battery to start makes sense. I gotta say I'm not confident the motor is the problem, as it looks brand new. I hope I didn't go to all this trouble for a washer rubbing on a nut or something stupid like that! Oh well, it's a good opportunity to learn.
