occasional chain rattle

Hello to all ..i have an 84 3.2 carrera and every once in awhile after a long drive usually interstate cruising i'll park my car for a few hours and start it up and hear chain rattle...i'll turn the car off and let it sit for a minute or so and start it up again and the rattle will be gone.I'm sure it's cam chain rattle and It doesn't happen often.Anybody experience this. Thanks for the replies in advance.

Jay

If you're loosing a tensioner (Carrera) the rattle will be there until around 2000 rpms. They don't collapse enough to permit jumping time but need to be replaced.
To replace, you need to remove muffler, air channel, rear sheet metal after you lower the engine.
On the right side you lol need to remove the A/C console for room.
You'll need a chain box cover gasket and a cat to muffler gasket and a new tensioner.
If you're doing the right side, I suggest changing the cam oil line as while you're there..

Which brand and weight of oil are you using?

I had chain noise on occasion, switched oil per my wrench recommendation and never heard it since.

Hmm, that is what I am using currently. If I may suggest, try to start the car without the fan belt on to make certain it is the tensioner. Only for couple of minutes, no longer.

i/ve done that before trying to isolate the problem...guess the tensioners need to be replaced...just unusual that it does it every once in awhile and seems to come and go
