no smoke on start-ups
I've owned quite a few 911s in the past and all of them smoked when first started in the morning, so I was pleasantly surprised when my most recent one, an 87 Carrera with over 200k, didn't smoke at all...never...nada.
I always assumed they all smoked on start-ups, so I was just wondering if anyone else has been that lucky. Cheers, Joe |

Mine rarely ever smokes on startup but sometimes for no particular reason it does. It also is not related to length of time since last startup, it's just strange why occasionally it decides to smoke? It's not much smoke but it is noticeable. Seems to happen maybe 1 out of 10 starts. Motor is very tight with less than 6000 miles since full rebuild and less than 2% leak down.

Joe,
Did you get a new 87 Carrera recently?

My '87 never smokes on startup, even after sitting for weeks.
I Keep the oil level half way between the marks on the dipstick. (112K mi.) (when first purchased the oil level was overfilled and the '87 did smoke on start up. Changed oil w correct amt. = cured that.) My '83 Cab does smoke on startup if it sits for a few days. Clears up within a minute, I've been told "they all do that, it's normal" ??? (135K mi) I have asked but not heard an explanation of why one smokes and one doesn't ![]()

Joe,
Nice looking car, like the color. Only comment is why is the ride height so high? The front is way high. Ground to fender lip at the front should be about 25 1/2" and the rear fender height about 25" looks like someone increased the ride height?

I know... just trying to keep that original "Euro" height and retro look as delivered from the factory with cookies and all...
Since everybody lowers them and have fuchs (been there done that), I thought it would be refreshing to have something slightly different. Joe Last edited by stlrj; 11-13-2015 at 11:56 AM.. |

This recent post about "Hygge" is where I was inspired to switch to cookies:

I posted a link to a solution offered by a competitor which Pelican doesn't have. It was deleted. It appears that if that if Pelican doesn't sell it, or anything like it, they don't want you to know about it. I can understand wanting subs here to shop here, but this is taking absurdity to new levels. This is the first time I have seen Pelican not doing the right thing. My only thought is that it was deleted by someone following orders who lacks critical thinking.

Do a search for Rothsport oil inlet check valve on this site. It fits in the "S" oil line, and prevents the oil from draining back into the case from the oil tank. Quite pricey, but if you want to do away with the smoke at startup perhaps this could resolve it for you. I don't have any experience with it...mine doesn't smoke.
Regards, David

Hard to believe that all non smokers are blessed with the uncanny ability not drain back like all the others. There must be more to it than that. |

Does the lower crankcase have the potential to form positive pressure? If so, perhaps some engines have a tighter seal (less air that leaks out) minimizing the flow of oil back into the crankcase from the oil tank.

Maybe people can distinguish between oil smoke and condensation. Mine always has white "smoke" on cold startup, but the engine is a real miser when it comes to oil - maybe a quart every 3,500 miles. I've always assumed it's condensation in the exhaust system since I never seem to go through much oil.

Certain competitor names get automatically blotted out in a post. Have never seen an entire post eliminated.
