my sway bar bracket broke off

and I'm looking for someone that is willing to weld mine back on but I'm having a hard time
my question is if i take the sway bar completely off would be a danger to ride around like that until i find someone that can put it back together

Porboynz 11-17-2015 08:47 PM

Well unless you are planning to tackle Nurburgring there will be no problem removing the sway bar. Just avoid 10/10ths cornering until resolved.

thanks brother

Both mine tore off recently too so I picked up a set of WEVO from our host and had them welded on by a muffler shop. The moment he saw me coming, he said "sway bar mounts hey... haven't seen too many lately but have done a ton of them in the past."

Wow, I thought he was psychic.

Oh, almost forgot, he only charged me $100 so I gave him a $20 tip...and worth every penny.

By the way, I drove around with both broken sway mounts for two weeks and hardly noticed any difference.

Cheers,

Joe
87 Carrera w/ new sway bar mounts

I am curious. A question to the folks that have had a sway bar mount break. Do you have super sticky tires or oversize tires?

I still have my OEM 15 inch wheels and I have done over 100 autocrosses and several track day DEs on my 85 Carrera. I check my sway bar mounts when I have the car up in the air. No sign of a crack and they look perfect. I just wonder if it is the gummy sticky tires causing higher loads to the suspension than designed or if it is just a fundamental weakness in some brackets.

I just run normal street tires but those are almost all gone for 15 inch wheels. I will be going to bigger wheels and tires just to find some decent rubber. I will keep checking the mounts.

stlrj 11-18-2015 05:21 AM

At the time I had just replaced my fuchs with 15" cookies shod with Kumho all season tires when my mounts failed. Even Jay, the muffler guy who did the welding, said the old mounts were not original and had already been replaced before. Seems to be the Achilles heel on these older 911s.

Are you kidding? The Tire Rack still has a ton of choices.

gliding_serpent 11-18-2015 06:00 AM

Wevo all the way. My rebuilder said it is a matter of when, not if.

wayner 11-18-2015 06:04 AM

For those with pre 74 cars, and BIG sticky tires, also look at supporting the center of the torsion bar tube. They bent in racing so the factory beefed up the design on newer cars.

( think about where the banana arm puts pressure on the tube under cornering and you will see why center supports are a good idea)

Likely not an issue on the street but could be

Details in my thread if you search for it ( see my signature)

Stupid question but, front or rear sway bar?
I think I read it's common for rear sway bar mounts to be weak.
What is the remedy? Rewelding them in with support?

ganun 11-18-2015 02:09 PM

87 non turbo got the largest to date rear bar, iirc a 21 mm, previously they were 18mm and turbos stayed with the 18mm I know not why. My car had the rear ripped, made it squirrelly when throwing it around a corner, MUCH flatter and controllable with the original 21 mm bar.
Weld it back adapt. Upgrade the mount.

Rear. Wevo and a couple others make a much beefier solution to replace the stock mounts.

To the OP, if you're near San antonio Texas, come on over. Bring the replacements and I'll grind off the originals and weld on the new ones for you.

Glen, i was still on street tires at the track when my mounts went. Tires were 255/45-17. I'm attributing the failures to my flat-out driving :D

Yea, for track tires lots of options. I drive my car on the highway. I plan to drive up into Canada and far NE of the USA next year. Rain happens. I want a normal high performance summer tire with the ability to drive safely in the rain. Not much of any option left.

That is WAY more traction that the factory designed the car for. I have zero proof that is the cause of the sway bar mounts tearing. I just know for a fact that I average 6 to 8 autocrosses every year and over 20 years that is over 120 autocrosses with no isssues whatsoever using 225s on the 15 inch 8 inch factory Fuchs rears.

Totally agree with you on way more traction than originally designed.

I do love my wevo mounts tho :) No issues w/ sticky tires and big Smart Racing ARBs.

I had to replace and weld in Wevos on my 1987, it had a larger/adjustable rear sway. It is a weak area that will fail when over stressed. Stronger wevos have remained welded. They are way more robust than the original mounts.

Get the JWE bracket (better than Wevo) and never worry about it again!

This is how my bracket broke. Welded WEVO brackets, no problem since then.
Tires used Toyo RA1 245/45/16

Running hard on sticky tires the fronts will fail as well. Enough flexing and the tub metal gets brittle and just cracks out. Elephant sells a front reinforcement plate for tihis very reason. Something to do before you need to.

vintagecarlover 11-19-2015 04:57 PM

Track events at road Atlanta keep that small welding shop in biz. Strategic business location was critical for him. Known atleast Two guys in my short time who used him. He puts cars back on the track for next runs. Doesn't get excited. Just another sway weld. Yawn...

Thank you everyone for the great advice did you have trouble moving the oil lines ??
