Porsche Crest What if Porsche builds an 8 cyl. 911?

I was just reading this months excellence and they have an article about porsche possibly building an 8 cylinder 911.
I know we have heard rumors of this but it got me to thinking.
As we all know one of the most taboo things to do to any 911 is to put an 8 in it, but if the factory does it then is it going to be acceptable for dropping into older cars like we do with 993 and 964 engines.
Also is it then going to be more acceptable to use a non-porsche 8 cylinder or will it have to be the real thing.
Just a little food for thought.

Most brand new Porsche 911 owners probably dont even know how many cylinders their current engine has....6 or 8 wouldn't make too much of a difference...

you and me may care about this but give it another 20 years.....then we can start to worry.

They are calling it the 997 and the picture is of the back of the car.
It definitely is wider in the rear so they can fit that 8 in there.
Looks interesting though.

I read awhile back that the 8 that they are talking about is
going to be a new flat 8. Who knows....?

If it is a flat 8, comes from the factory and it sounds like our current flat 6 then I can only imagine 2 more cylinders being a good thing.

It won't sound like a six unless you pull a few plug wires off!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The flat eight should sound good though although it will be quieter if it is water cooled.

I won't be able to afford one until it's 20 yrs old and has 200,000 miles on it anyway.

Well I don't know guys, I get goose bumps everytime I hear the sound of a Porsche flat 12!!

But here is a better sticking point, would you accept a flat 8 while spit on a V8?

Two more cylinders can't be bad! But I'm with Rstoll....I'll be stuck with 6 until at least 2015.

Nick.

Thumbs up

Six! You guys got six cylinders? Well... that explains a lot.

I think the reason that people don’t like 8cyl conversions is that they use US iron. The Porsche flat 6 has a lower center of gravity that a standard V8. If Porsche builds an 8 using the same principles as the current 6 then I think that would be good all around. Maybe then Porsche could race with the big boys and win. I too would have to wait for 20 years or so to get my hands on one but what the heck; I still haven’t gone to a 6 yet.

Yep, I would. The flat configuration is the better engineering solution in every way except cheap manufacturing.

i would love a flat 8... but the new 997 is going to need it to cart around its newfound, and quite conciderable girth.

That's cool. But to call it a 911 makes no sense to me.

For that matter calling a 996, 993, or 964 a 911 doesn't make sense either. What's wrong with calling a 996 a 996?

But an 8cyl. car that has a rear engine a 911.
I know, let's just call all of our rear engined cars 356's.

Looks interesting though.
I wouldn't think the motor would be any wider because of the extra cylinders - it would just be longer.

Hmmm......horizontally opposed 8 cylinders.......
Now let our minds drift to turbo charging such an engine......

FWIW, Just read in the new 911&PW that Porsche "insiders" at the Paris auto show emphatically denied this rumor, (911 8cylinder). They say that the spy photo of a wider car is nothing more than a Carrera 'S'. 996 is due for extensive redevelopment, however.

I don't think the 997 will be an 8 cylinder, but some day it will probably happen. It better be a BOXERMOTOR Too bad the Carrera GT is a V10. Imagine a flat 12 instead....
