Backdate questions
 

Hi all,

I have read the the threads but nothing I am reading is specifically telling if and how I can pull off the following mods.

Here we go.

First the frame is 1982 911 sc with turbo flares that were welded on.

For the 72 rsr look what rear bumper is needed? There are different sizes but I imagine that fattest available, please advise.

On the front end I am addressing rust issues and already have a few pieces ready to
Weld in after a little more clean up. I purchased a steel longhood on eBay and got my hands on a fiberglass ducktail from Craigslist.
I have read that one can either cut out the whole front panel the the short hood latches onto, not sure what that piece is called, and replace with a 69-73 piece or is there a way to simply modify the existing piece to accept the longhood.
There is also the issues of the turn signal housings and an additional piece that needs to bridge the housing and the turbo fender.
I have attached a few photos of where I am currently at with the front end.

If you don't mind a fiberglass use a conversion hood. Talk to Dave at TRE.

Here's another recommendation that you reach out to Dave at TRE. I told him the rear end I wanted for my project (narrow body LWB) and he knew exactly which bumper to use. I'm also using their fiberglass backdate hood.

The issue with the hood lies in how it latches. Short hoods latch farther up (closer to the windshield) and have a different front panel. To get your long hood to latch your options are:

A. weld in a front latch panel from a long hood
B. weld a short hood latch onto your long hood
C. use TRE's backdate hood (fiberglass version of option B)
D. skip latching altogether and use hood tie downs

B seems the most straight forward. If it as simple as taking a latch from a short hood and welding it onto the correct spot I think that the way I will go.
P.s. With my skills nothing is simple.

I'd suggest not going with 'D' since that will leave the car vulnerable to villains.

Since you like 'B', I'd add that you can lengthen the emergency latch to make it easier to open. This is the same issue (and suggested solution) if you were to go with option 'C'.

there's another option, you can peal the skin away from the structure of booth hoods and use the underside structure of the short hood with the skin of the long hood. It'll be a bit of work though.

I dont know if you can just throw the long hood on and use rubber tie downs, I think the hood inner structure interferes and it wont quite close all the way. its not bad but the hood stands proud a little. If you are not going concourse its probably fine, but if you are already cutting and welding....

Also the fenders are completely different in the front as is the bumper attachment. TRE sells a piece to convert your fenders but there will be additional fab on a wide body.
