Motive Power Bleeder question

OK...decided to use the Power Bleeder as designed to bleed clutch system rather than continually adding a little fluid to reservoir...bleed...add little more...bleed, etc.
However here is my question (did search and read Motive instructions but still not clear) Exactly how "full" should the reservoir be when I attach the Power Bleeder (with a quart or so of brake fluid inside) to the reservoir? When I open the slave bleeder screw I assume the fluid will flow into the reservoir but will it fill it up or does the level stay the same...i'm confused a bit on this part.
Thanks,

I use my Motiv dry. Fill the reservoir, pinch off the overflow hose, pressurize and bleed the slave. That system bleeds quickly, so you should not run low on fluid unless you go too long after the bubbles are gone. Put a short 7mm box end on the nipple and attach a long hose into a pan, then watch for the air bubbles to stop. Pedal up in the process.

Thanks John, the problem I ran into is I'm not very good/fast at getting the bleeder screw tighten back up. I ended up letting air into the system since the fluid dropped below the "intake" hose. Maybe I just need to work a little faster!!! Or maybe I'm opening the bleeder screw too far? It seems like when it's opened a little more it moves trapped air faster but maybe thats just my imagination.

As long as you have the overflow hose pinched or capped off on the reservoir as John noted the fluid level in the reservoir will remain the same as when you started as long as some amount of brake fluid remains in the Motive tank. Bleeding with the tank empty on the clutch system is a good idea, it does not take much to get the air out and will save you the trouble of cleaning up the excess brake fluid.

If you dont pinch off the overflow line or if the cap at the reservoir leaks it will fill up the master cylinder to the max and make a bit of a mess when you disconnect.

You only need to crack the bleeder open just a little bit; just enough to see fluid moving in your clear hose connected to the bleeder. If you open it too far, often times it will look like you have a ton of air in the system but in reality you are actually sucking air in from around the bleeder threads.

I have a 7mm box end about 3 inches long that works great for that job. Just open it a bit until it bleeds the air and shut it off. Keep your hand up there on the wrench. The long hose keeps the fluid off your shirt.

Routing the hose upward (at least for a few inches) at the nipple will also help the air bubbles to flow away from the nipple (as well as making them more obvious).

BTW - The best upgrade to the Motive that I have done is add a quarter turn ball valve to the hose so I can stop the pressure without having to release all the pressure from the bottle (or spray brake fluid all over).

I added a quick disconnect between the hose and the MC cap to achieve the same thing. Also makes it easier to screw on the cap w/o kinking up the hose.

Wow, two nice upgrades to my motive which I've been using dry since the first time with fluid. I'll be hitting the hardware store for a few items this week. Thanks for sharing.

I like the idea of the ball valve.

Another upgrade is to drill a hole in it and install a metal tire valve so you can pressurize with your compressor instead of the slow hand pump.

Can anyone guess the hose barb size/hose ID or should I just cut the hose myself and measure to be sure ? Looks like your basic 1/4" probably.

Brain fade moment, don't cut the hose at all, just put valve where the male/female connection is now.

Here is a cheesy mobile upload. Pretty basic. Went to Lowes and got a ball valve and a disconnect.

A lazy man's cheating device! I like it!
(Headed to Ace Hardware anyway...)
