oil cooler fan thermoswitch

ok, i get an entire external cooling system. on the drive home, the fan thermoswitch breaks. ok i am an idiot when it comes to safely packing things. i am looking into parts. on PP, i guess they offer some that switch the fan on at a lower temp. but the switches have two prongs. is one prong simply the ground? and the second prongs get spliced to the existing wire? i am sorta bummed because now i cant start the install this weekend.

cliff.
anyone have a wiring diagram for the rest of the connections.?

yes, one side is ground, the other goes to pin 85 of your relay.

Here is diagram of fan installaion on my car. I used three way switch so the fan can be thermo controlled, turned off, or turned on.

If your setup uses the factory carrera harness, relay and fan, it should look something like this:
Personally, I would not opt for the 3-way switch setup in the previous post simply because I might accidently leave it turned off. I cannot think of any situation driving the car and it exceeded my preferred temp range where I would not want the fan to come on. Make sure your fan turns in the proper direction for airflow from the front of the car...if it turns the wrong way, simply reverse the two wires to it.

For wiring a manual switch, I simply pushed a wire into the pin 85 socket and then plugged the relay in. The wire runs in to the cabin to a switch to ground. Seems to work fine but, is there a better way to access pin 85?

You could splice into the wire anywhere between pin 85 (back of the relay socket and the thermostat or do it at the connector near where it goes through the fenderwall. You could carefully open the conector and solder it to the pin that is attached to the blue wire.

Some folks prefer to add the switch so they can turn it if they anticipate driving that will realy test the coolers capability..ie driving in slow traffic with A/C on at high ambient temps (mid July). Their rationale is that they can keep it a bit cooler that way if they start it at a even lower temp. When the switch is off, the fan only comes on when the thermostat closes. I like a switch because it allows me to test the fan prior to it reaching a temp where I will need it. I personnally used a lighted rocker switch which fits perfectly in an existing dash cutout. With the lighted switch, I know when the switch is on. Also, because I ran the power for the switch's light from the fan's power wire, I can tell if the fuse is blown or if there is some other reason the fan might not receive power. Finally, the switch would allow you to use the fan if the thermostat failed...until you could replace it.

I use the factory foglight switch on my car. I can do this because I do whatever I want (and I removed the foglights)

Problem there is that you have to have your running lights or headlights on to activate your fan. I have my aux oil cooler fan wired this way.

the two wiring diagrams above were great. i printed them and went to the salvage yard. i used the diagrams and matched everything up and found the original wiring harness still in the car. wires were everywhere! he let me have it without any additional cost. so i looks like "plug n play" for me. i didnt want to press my luck and borrow a grinder to take off the stock cooler mounts. i'll fab some, and with my welding skills i am sure they will look like ass.
thanks.

Good score on the factory harness! I used the brackets that Wayne sells and bolted them on...pretty inexpensive. I also used the thermoswitch that comes on at a lower temp. Here is a picture of the fan switch I mentioned. Installs without drilling any new holes. Not too terribly bling.

Sorry.

I thought your first sentence was poo-pooing the foglight switch idea.

I always thought only people trying to look cool had their running lights on during the daytime.

thanks everyone. except for a pinhole leak in one of the tstat lines (tobe replaced this weekend), everything went ok.

i was even ambitious enough to hook up a marcus sucros headlight relay, since i was there.
