Post Removing and Cleaning Up Fan and Housing

I was wondering if it is possiable to remove the fan and fan housing in a 1973 911s wihout taking the whole motor out. How long are we talking about?

I want to polish it and have it powder coated and it is looks bad, and this would really clean up the motor bay.

Yes you should be able to take it out without removing the engine, just watch the wires on the rear for the altenator.

As for powdercoating, read in some of the old posts on this, you may have to "shave" the ends down a touch or it will not fit back in with the extra layer of paint. Or just do not powdercoat the tips.

I agree they look way better cleaned and repainted, will also be doing mine this winter.

It takes less than an hour, easy job. Don;t lose the key on the alt shaft when you pull it apart. Make sure you disconnect your battery first.

My powder coater (Metal Refinishing Systems, Eldersburg, MD)advised me about 5 years ago that they could not powder coat magnesium. The fan and housing on my 1972 911T are magnesium. I suspect that yours (1973)are too.

I ended up wire-brushing my fan and housing with several diferent wire brushes attached to a drill to remove most of the built-up oxidation. I then lightly sandblasted the parts, cleaned them,and primed/painted them with engine enamel that I purchased in spraycan format from Pep Boys.

The parts fit together perfectly on assembly and I have not experienced any chipping at the fan blade edges.

I just did this last weekend. It started as a project to just spray paint the raw cast Intercooler on the turbo which was impossible to clean. So once I had it off I was tempted to do the fan. Read it carefully and closely. For a first timer going slow Id say figure 2-3 hours. Also more time if you dont note the number of shims on the pulley system. Should you paint the shroud as well one thing I would do is put a round piece of cardboard around the rim to prevent any chips or scuffs during reinstalation. Also make sure battery is disconnected I was smart enough to blow my Voltage regulator. Figure by ened of this I can swap fans/alts in about 15mins (joking) Below are some pics.
