911 ownership without a garage

I have owned my 993 for 3 years now, but I never had a garage. Am I the only one? I don't drive in the winter time after it snows. I usually wash my car before putting a cover on. What do you do if you don't have a garage?

I meant to build a garage, but it hasn't happened yet. I just rebuilt my house. So in the spring, I will work on building a very simple yet beautiful carport. If you have a beautiful carport, please share.

Here is a photo of my old humble house before renovation and my 993.

I have a couple of A/C Porsches and in my climate honestly, I wouldn't own them if I didn't have some means of getting them out of the weather. To me they are too valuable both in $ and to me. I wouldn't want them to deteriorate over a few seasons. The 993 is a fully galvinized body but you should have a look at a build that's happening in the UK right now on the Rennlist 993 site.....yikes! It is coming along beautifully but what they started with was really bad.....rust all over. I live in the PNW which has a UK like climate. I'm not nutty, I drive my cars all over and have been in rain and snow many times but I won't let them sit 24/7 without shelter. Cheers

Building a shop now, I have had my 911 out side for the last 2 years. You are not alone. Just do what you can with yours and enjoy...

Looks like a good set up, a Porsche, a mini house, a building for 2 cars and a man cave above. Perfect for a single guy.

Turbo owner has it right. Widen the door on the left hand building and park it inside.

It's not only the weather that will ruin your ride but critters like mice and squirrels that can squeeze in through the smallest opening and chew up everything as well as pee and poop on everything. My wife has her two cars in the garage, so I rented a 10'x20' storage units at $105/month, which is a bit of a pain, but the 911 is fairly secure.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one! I figured that 911 is for everyone, not just for people with fancy or any garage.

I haven't seen any rust and insects and animals damaging any part yet.

When I bought it, it was not so expensive; the price increase of 993 over the past 3-4 years is quite crazy.

Anyway, I am looking into the simplest way of protecting my car better, but I don't want to get a cheap looking carport. I want my carport to look as beautiful as my 993.

My car wasn't garaged for years by the PO. Everything suffered from that....

While not optimal, I get a 1 ton pneumatic chain lift anywhere in on the pad.

Boulder Creek CA. My investment is in the fun portion, when this one is beyond its service life I will buy another, from the widow of the guy who kept it garaged and un-driven. Just like the one I currently own. All you investment owners, I thank you from the bottom of my wallet, you keep them nice and shiny and low mileage, I will acquire and drive it like its stolen after you are gone. Both my cars came from this formula.....

For the first four years I owned my 911, I had only a carport over a concrete pad. It kept the rain off in the summer, but I still rented a car sized unit in a storage place for the several months of winter we have up here.

If I had the space you appear to have, I might be tempted to buy (or rent if you plan to build a garage in the next year or so) a steel intermodal shipping container. They are eight feet wide and come in two lengths: 20 and 40 feet. They're inexpensive, tough and look decent when you put a coat of paint on the outside to suit your tastes. With the metal floor, walls and roof, they're also pretty critter proof. You could have an instant two car garage over the weekend!

They are often customized - Total Container Solutions - and used as mobile offices here on oilfield sites, temporary housing, storage facilities and even for some of the housing for the Vancouver Olympics, I believe. Get creative!

And another shot with a 911 inside a shipping container...

I think the shipping container idea above is a great idea. The only worry I would have is lack of ventilation, especially if you are in a wet climate. But I think that could be address also without to much trouble.

In the end, it is your car and you got to work with what you have.

It is a geat idea. We use one to store contractor tools in... And that is in the middle of a rain forest, no moisture or condensation problems. If more ventilation is required, cut a couple of holes, flash and place a small fan in the exit side. As you can tell in Kev's picture it would be a little bit of a squeeze getting in and out of her though. Cheers

Maybe not the prettiest solution, but I have heard these CarCoons are fairly good.
The ventilate dry air inside and comes in both indoor and outdoor versions.

I can definitively say that I saw a slow degradation of my 911 during the 2-3 years it was outside (under a high quality all-weather cover) until I completed my garage project. Best to keep any classic/collectible car indoors...

The thing about your current set up that would concern me is that your car is parked over organic matter -- grass and dirt -- rather than pavement or concrete. That allows moisture from the ground to condense on the underside of the car. A good car cover, while obviously not as good as a roof, should keep water out of the interior spaces in the car. But the underside is what I would protect if you can't -- or until you do -- build a garage. Maybe lay a patch of asphalt or concrete. Even plastic tarp would do, although it would look horrible.

It may be a bit dicey toleave the car outside, but so what? Are you enjoying the car? Does it get driven regularly? Who cares if you have a garage or not, it's all academic.

Just keep a good coat of wax on the car, treat the leather and do the best you can.

I keep mine inside but for the winter I've thought about buying a car trailer and locking mine inside rather than building a bigger garage.

Car trailers are fairly easy to re sell.

If outdoors I would check the seals around the glass and touch up with this stuff if there are any concerns.
(just a tiny bit does the trick)
