Fuchs Wheels Education Needed

Hi - 911 Newbie question. I recently purchased a '67 911 SWB sunroof car I'm going to restore. The Kardex doesn't list any special wheels that came with the car, but it is on 4.5" Fuchs wheels (anodized with black). I'll have them refinished I suppose, but they're not my favorite style. I would like to get some 5.5" or possibly 6" wheels/tires on the car and more of the fully anodized aluminum look or some of the anodized & black wheels that "look a little deeper". See my attached picture. This is how I want my car to look when I'm done (wheels and color!)

I know nothing (yet) about these wheels, the offsets, etc. except that it's going to be tight to put 6 inch wheels in the rear wheel wells which are not modified, nor do I plan on adding flares. What are the offsets and sizes that I should be looking for for a basically stock SWB 911?

Anything you all can share would be appreciated, or if you can point me to a thread (I've searched) or a website that explains all things Fuchs, that'd be great.

Thank you.

Whatever you decide to do, understand that the 4.5" Fuchs are very valuable.

VERY VALUABLE. I stumbled across 3 of them on a Craigslist advert. Bought them without realizing what they were. Ended up selling them to Harvey Weidman after he educated me about them. I made enough from the sale to purchase and install a nice lift in my garage. ; )

Thanks javadog & tdw28210. I plan to have the 4.5's restored properly. I will be facing the first of 3 college tuitions in a short 8 years, so this is good information.

Mine had to maintain a B average to get college paid for, mom and I got off cheap, after a year he's was off to the Army.

No way we're we going to pay for a 4 year party, ya want to party? Get a job first

That car is amazingly beautiful and what a great color. I believe 6s were the original size wheels. If you are not enamored with 5s, contact Harvey Weidman and see if he will trade for the correct size or work a deal. I hate to say it, but black wheels on such a classic would be a travesty. Correctly refinished period Fuchs would look amazing, but it's your trip. Do what makes you happy, wheels can always be changed.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the car. That thing looks fantastic - are you sure you want to restore? How original is it? History? More pics and info, please!

To try to answer your question, Fuchs is making wheels again but they are much too wide and tall for your chassis and it doesn't appear they are going to make period correct wheels for your 1967. I would highly recommend that you don't let them out of your hands! Make sure that you determine the part number for each wheel and ensure that there is a little fox stamped somewhere nearby.

You mentioned that you were going to "restore" your vehicle. Keep the Fuchs in the plan. They might need refinishing somewhat, but what you have is the envy of all older Porsche owners.

As far as offset goes, that is a mystery that eludes me too. If you can determine the offset of your wheels try to keep the numbers the same on whatever you end up with and then you can be mostly assured they will fit. As for the so-called "deep Fuchs" you may run into fitment problems and I don't believe they would be kosher in a "restore" plan. I'm guessing that a 6x15 wheel will fit in an un-flared rear wheel well just fine; they do on my '73T and the bodies are very similar if not the same.

Bottom line, you have some very rare and valuable wheels. Contact a reputable refinisher like Harvey Weidman and see what he'll do for you in a trade plus a little bit for you.

Best,

Tom

Is $800 a good price for 4, 14x5.5s? I'm the buyer.

If they are genuine Fuchs probably so. Refinishing and straightening will up the price a couple hundred dollars per wheel. Make sure they have a readable part number on the inside of each wheel and, ideally, the part numbers should be the same. Genuine Fuchs will have a little fox silhouette stamped near those part numbers.

One thing for certain, 14" tires are getting difficult to find.

Just for the record, this picture is NOT my car. This pcutre is what I want my car to look like, when I'm done in about 2 years. I chose this picture because of these wheels which differ from my beat up 4.5" Fuchs.

Hi Patz,

I'm keeping my 4.5 Fuchs for the time being, my body shop needs something for the time being on the car. I'm looking thought to find out whether or not 6Jx15's will fit stock fenders and/or what those offsets are.

Thanks

Hi Dan,

Thanks. Do you know this car or do you just know the Fuchs wheels that well? How can you tell they're 7 inches? Is that a slight rolled fender?
