California smog!!!!

My smog is due again on my 85 Carrera . I usually do all the required things before the test but I can't remember....Is it best to use 87 rated gas for the test over 91? Also, I put Valvoline 20/50 racing in my car but would there be a better temp oil to put in just for the test? Thank you. I hate test time!!!

On a good spirited drive 50-100 miles get your engine good & warm 220f-230f,
and don't let it cool off prior to testing.

New plugs, good 02 sensor.

& Good luck.

Best,

Gerry

change your air filter.
Over inflate your rear tires, I inflate to 40 psi. Over inflating your tires lessens the load on the engine. I also clean all the breather hoses which has oil residue in them.

smog

In addition to the items mentioned above, for my 87 I also run "Guaranteed to Pass" in the gas tank BEFORE the you test. After running that tank of gas, drain the oil to remove the contaminants and gas up with prem. or hi test. If you have to go to a STAR facility, check the rubber "O" ring on the gas cap as they will also pressure check test your gas system for leaks.

I also make a 20-30 mile run on the freeway on the way to the test station to get it hot.

Some believe 91 octane helps to reduce NOx.

As a sidenote, If the evap canister is not visible or requires any jacking up of the vehicle to access, the tech to supposed to waive that portion of the test.

Getting it hot is a good idea, as it purges the crankcase of unburned hydrocarbons and also purges the evap canister. You don't want these things purging during the test. Also, the CAT is getting hot and the CAT reduces all 3 pollutants, HC, CO and NOx. If your car has had difficulty passing in the past, then I would not shut it off or leave it for the smog to pick up later. If the car sits, the CAT will cool.

Don't forget about the visual inspection. Make sure all of your vacuum hoses are attached and the timing is set to factory specs.
