diy, mine was also shipped with that color. I should quit trying to evaluate this color, since it is quite the chameleon. I know you'll know what I mean. At times it looks gold. Other times nearly black. On my screen, your pic shows more purple/mauve, whereas the platinum metallic above looks closer to the actual color of my car. Even though my car is in fact 662. At dusk, your car would surely look very different. I've gone from not liking the color much, to loving it very much. Next time I paint the wheels (20 years from now, probably), I may go with body color. I think the tail looks very sharp!

FWIW, Super, your color looks better going down the road, than when parked.

When Eric and I caught up to you on the BC "secret test track", I had to say it out loud; "damn, that color does look good."
The chameleon nature of that color really gets dynamic when moving down the road.

all black whale tail

does anyone have subjective (or references) on the performance of the all black rubber whale tail?

I like this one purely because it doesn't require painting. I don't recall the Frere book having data on it, but he does have a lot of good stuff on the duck tail (berzel)

FWIW Glenn, I grabbed the large image and ran it through PS to remove a color cast and color correct it. I think the tweaked image better shows off the color.

Super, you are on the money with purple/mauve as you are about the night time change as well. The most dramatic is when the sky is a bit overcast. It looks like paltinum on top and fades to black at the bottom. I just have a hard time telling someone who has not the seen the car in person what color it actually is.

911driver, I asked the same thing when thinking of replacing te Turbo tail with a Carrera (84+) or Weissach style tail. Take a look at this post and look for the sketch from Pano. This might help. The most important I've seen over and over is that one (chin/tail) doesn't work well without the other.

Outstanding photo-touch, Gary!

I have the Peter Morgan book from were the original picture must have been scanned; and your "filtering" makes the shot look better than the book.

Since this is a tail thread, I'll add another pic.

The benefit of the Turbo tail IS the look!! ;)

Wow, Robert! . . . that color is cool! It's like silver, but better. ;)

rstoll 12-04-2002 06:10 PM

Yeah, it's that mystery Superman color. Changes from light to light. I like it best at sunset around 90 mph. :) :)

arcsine 12-04-2002 06:38 PM

That is an awfully nice color.

911driver 12-04-2002 06:48 PM

nice pics

Thanks Tony, good info at that link.

diy and rstoll: are either of those tails by chance all rubber ones (no painting required)? I'm seeing both of them from a front angle, so I can't see exactly what type of tails they are. Thanks.

That would appear to be the same color as my 82SC coupe. That is Platinum Metallic. Speedy1

I believe you could order the badge deleted (w/ or w/o tail). When it was on the tail, you can see the placement on that extraordinary colored Weissachs coupe. You know the Platinum Metallic one. . .a few posts back. . . kinda like silver, but better. (TIC)
