83SC did it have a tail when new??

The PO added a factory Turbo Tail to my car. But does anyone know if Porsche offered a tail option from the factory in 1983 for the US market?????

TRE Cup 12-02-2002 05:26 PM

If my aging gray cells serve me correctly, Porsche offered three tails for the 83 as options
One is the Weissach tail- looks just like a 75 carrera whale tail (complete decklid)with the oe grill installed
The other was an all plastic/rubber tail that bolted on the oe rear lid that is heavy and ugly beyond description
Finally the turbo tail (M473 option) was available- it is according to the Pet 5 Porsche program as well as a number of targas we saw equipped with them.

Hmmm...I'm currently struggling with which tail to put on mine. Don't really want to put any on it, but for the actual benefits.

What does the 1975 Weissach tail look like?

rstoll 12-02-2002 06:17 PM

benefits......right.;)

My euro delivery SC came with a turbo tail.....which is for sale along with the matching chin spoiler:D

Lindy 12-02-2002 07:41 PM

The two options for the 1983 SC were the Turbo (or "tea tray") style, and the whaletail style (essentially the same as the 1984 tail).

kristian85 12-02-2002 11:04 PM

So, s'far's I can tell, the Weissach spoiler is the 1975 Turbo spoiler, yes?

Bobboloo 12-03-2002 12:05 AM

Not exactly.

I believe the 75' Turbo, Weissach, and Carrera tail were all whaletails. But they differed somewhat in the venting. The 75' Turbo had a secondary vent. In 76' the secondary vent got larger for more heat dissapation. The Weissach tail doesn't have this vent because it produced less heat. Later on in 82' the whaletails started being made with one large vent that was flat like the tea tray spoiler. These I think are often refered to as Carrera tails. They also recieved a larger rubber surround area.

Hmmm my tail looks just like the one on MikeZs car with the tall fiberglass base and the large rubber lip it is NOT the same as the Weissach its taller. I know the car did not come with one from the dealer as the PO did not just put a tail on the car he put a "Carrera" decklid with the Turbo tail and Carrera script on it (Gasp! Don't tell my fellow SCWDP members!). If anyone out there has a clean white SC stock decklid I would be glad to trade em my Carrera decklid tail and all !

Bobboloo 12-04-2002 12:34 AM

mikez is not a whaletail. It looks like a teatray.

:D My point exactly. I have a Turbo Tail (Tea tray).

speeder 12-04-2002 02:40 AM

semantics

Since all of these terms, (whale tail, tea tray, etc.), are nick-names that people started calling them, it's a little imprecise. The name whale tail may very well have originated at the factory, or w/ factory racing teams, but never in any official sales literature. I have always heard people refer to the stock 930 tail, ('78-'89), as a "whale tail", (the one that MikeZ has), though you could certainly argue that a carrera tail looks more like the one on an actual whale. And it does look like a "tea tray", but that is definitely something that people just started calling them, (for the same spoiler).

930 tails are the only ones I ever saw from factory on late SCs, late-style carrera tail came in 1984 w/ 3.2 carrera. FWIW.

Not entirely correct, although you're right about the venting--I don't want the additional vent for my car. I just want it because it is significantly better looking than an '80s Carrera tail as I don't like any of the tails except on widebodies. See this page for excellent pics--the '75 Turbo spoiler actually came from the late RS, and was also seen on the 3.0 Carrera in lieu of the duck tail, which was banned in Germany: http://www.tavlecentret.dk/Michael/Porsche/Porsche%20Enlarged/911/1976_911_Carrera_Sport.htm

And Weissach: http://www.tavlecentret.dk/Michael/Porsche/Porsche%20Enlarged/911/1980_911SC_Coupe.htm

According to the 1982/83 Porsche Audi Fact Book, getting either option "471; Competition Group" or "473; Spoiler, front & rear" would get you the tail. Unfortunately, neither this book is the 1983 SC sales brochure has a picture of the tail.

I would not be so hasty to just give it away. If its a real one, they can be worth some pretty good money. Sell it and buy a good used decklid and use the extra cash for somethign else.

Thats my opinion atleaset. I am thinking of removing the "tea tray" and selling it that the PO put on my narrow body cab as well.

What color is that car in the picture" It looks like the Smiky Quartz Metalic color I am forever ranting about, but I think that's probably an illusion because the Weissach edition did not come in that color. What color is that?

island911 12-04-2002 11:55 AM

What color !?

Not that I'm any kinda expert on this  but I believe it's Platinum Metallic. . . .kinda a favorite of mine ;)

Actually, that is the same pic as this (different scan changing the percieved color)

Mine shipped from the factory with M473 (front and rear spoilers.) According to the window sticker, the OEM cost was $1325.... Superman, this one is Quartz Grey Metallic or (Rauschquartz 662.)
