Installing fenders, hood, and bumpers tomorrow- Questions

Bumpers and hood are pretty straight forward. I have been reading a bit on the fenders. Which seam sealer is the best user friendly for the fenders? I have been thinking about 3M Automotive seam sealer. Any suggestions?

I have new bolts and nuts for the fenders. Any advice before tackling this job?

Thanks in advance.

Car is an 1985 Coupe.

Berk, I used 3m strip caulk. Worked great!

I am going to be installing my fenders soon too - after I paint. I found a factory part from another supplier than our host (PP didn't seam to have this or I would have purchased from them).

it's called Terostat Ribbon Sealing tape. It wasn't very expensive. PM me and I'll give you more details if needed.

Mark

Berk, I have read where some of the guys have set the margins on the fenders before painting. Than they drill 1/16" or 1/8" holes near some of the bolts so they can use clecos. This makes it easy to find the exact same position. Saves on the new paint by not having to bolt and unbolt the fenders. Than just dab seam sealer in the holes from under fender and dab the seam sealer with paint in the trunk. Just a thought. Like Mark said there are various tapes out there to use. Will be following. I'm about six months from paint. Still working on my margins. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just installed my fenders, used Terrastat tape (from Porsche) on the seams, painted Wurth black undercoating spray on the inner tub and inside of fender before mounting fenders. Painted all mounting bolts prior and touched up later once installed. A little "un Orthodox" , but came out excellent

You mean you don't just bolt the fenders on and you're done?

thanks for all the answers so far, keep them coming. Today I fiddled with the rear. Installed the rear bumper, new seals, new bellows. I tell you, this is not too easy. And I work on cars for living

Tomorrow moving to the front end of the deal.

I prefit all components prior to paint, painted them and then installed. The Wurth black spray undercoating is good stuff, 2 things to keep in mind, 1. My original (factory)undercoating was in nice shape 2. My car will be a very nice driver, and be driven. As I did with my other cars, I use products that I can easily touch up areas that get wear and tear from driving. The black Wurth stuff is great for that. It leaves a very original looking wheel well

Used Wurth spray cans, they work great, but you need more than you would think

Fender seal

In the 911SC USA 78_83 Katalog, illustration 801-30, Porsche specifies this rubber sealing tape PN#000-043-129-00 for the fender to body mount along the trunk line and again for the aft (vertical) mount. This stuff is still available and from our host - I used it on my car and it works well, but I then over sealed it both above and below with black 3M stuff, can't remember the number but it was for body work. This area easily picks up water from which there is no escape, causing rust. Seal the heck out of it.
