What size is this nut? Really.

So all I want for Christmas is a compilation of every mistake in the Bentley SC Service Manual.
I thought it would be clever to look up a fastener size in the book then go to the auto parts store, but the size listed in the book is wrong. (!) Says: 32mm but mine is something like 30mm.. ( a guesstimate) Not everyone has plus size socket's laying around so I had to buy one but first I had to buy the wrong one, thanks to Bentley over there....

Is there a Bentley Manual for Bentley's? No... I checked.

Talking about number 23 on this diagram: Size ?

Just measure the distance across the flat sides of the nut?

Nuts are sized according to the major diameter of the threads on whatever it is threaded onto, along with the thread pitch. The width across opposite flats determines what size socket or wrench that is needed. For some nuts, the relationship between these two dimensions is standardized, for others it is not.

On my 911, it's s 20mm nut that requires a 30mm socket. Yours is probably the same, but since not every part on every 911 ever made is the same, I suggest you measure yours. If you don't have a vernier caliper, you should probably buy one.

A sticky thread for mistakes in printed manuals would be a very valuable resource for future caretakers and technicians as it may be quite a while until some of these books are reprinted ( if ever). Links to missing information would also be helpful.

Yes, I own three calipers: 1 digital, 2 analog . I will measure it but I didn't have the calipers THAT day in the garage is off -site, 4 mi away from where the bulk of my tools is kept, hence the dependance on such sources of info as the Bentley manual and this site.
