Change 1984 911 high beam switch
I am attempting change a broken hi/low beam/ turn signal switch. I got as far as putting the new wires on the light switch. My problem is, the 4 wires on the replacement switch are color coded differently than the wires on the original switch. When looking at the new switches I see for sale, the replacement I have seems to be the same as those. It's just the original switch wiring color that is different. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Original wires are Red, Red-white stripe, dark gray-blue stripe, light gray. New wires are red-white stripe, white-black stripe (has J shaped connector) gray-red stripe, gray-black stripe.

I'm confused. Why would there be any wires on the new switch? Just detach the spade connectors from your current switch (making a note of their position), and then duplicate that layout with the new switch. I've never done this myself, but I don't think there would be any splicing involved.

He is replacing the hi/lo turn signal switch, not the headlight switch. They come pre wired.

From the SC wiring diagrams of the headlight switch.
Grey/Red and Grey/Black are the turn signal wires to R and L terminals respectively. Red/White is flasher switch power from terminal 30 White/Black is for the dimmer switch terminal 56

basically in the picture you are holding the wrong wires in your hands. The black and blue has no place in the turn signal combination switch, alias combo switch or turn signal switch..
You only unplug and replace those wires on the 2nd picture... Ivan |

The wires I am holding in the first photo are the 4 wires coming from the original hi/lo/turn switch that are connected to my headlight switch......yes they are the wrong color.....the right color wires, that I expected to find and are coming from the new hi/lo/turn switch, are not there. I don't know why they are different.....

are you sure that the black blue wire is to the switch on your car??did you actually remove the combo switch already or you are just holding the wires?

timmy2, is there a diagram that shows the physical location of each of the 4 hi/lo/turn wire connections on the headlight switch in relation to the other wires connected to the headlight switch?

Yes, they are the wires coming from the hi/lo/turn switch to the headlight pull switch. They are still attached to the pull switch and I am just holding the wires.

Thanks Ivan! That should help me figure out where they go. timmy2 stated up above......Grey/Red and Grey/Black are the turn signal wires to R and L terminals respectively.
Red/White is flasher switch power from terminal 30 White/Black is for the dimmer switch terminal 56 I see 30 and 56 on the switch....what about the turn signal wire numbers? He also mentions this info is from an SC.....are they different on a 84 Carrera? |

it is he same...what i think is that you might be holding a bunch of wire in your hand but the do not come from turn signal switch.Once you remove the switch it self you will end up with the correct wires in your hands

I am afraid to pull them off since I can't tell where the new ones go yet!

Understood. There are 2 cables coming from the turn switch. One has a round white connector that attaches to the firewall, that one I have already connected to the new switch, and the other one that goes to the headlight switch....I will triple check in the morning that I don't have the wrong wires. 99.9% sure that I don't.......

Ivan, well, I went down and checked and you are absolutely right!! I feel like an idiot....I assumed I had pulled on the right wires when in fact I did not! The correct colored wires are there.

I have the new switched wired up. car running... I have high and low beams working. But now have an issue with the turn signals. With the lights off they work OK - but seem weaker than normal on the front of the car. With the headlights on, things get hairy....left turn works OK right turn on steady and dim. Right turn on, flashes slower and doesn't go out between flashes - left side on constantly. Flashers work OK. I guess there was a reason why I waited all these years to try to fix this.
