Another happy PSJ customer

Wanted to add a vote of support for WEVO's PSJ coupler. When I bought my car, it had the stock 915 coupler and old bushings. I replaced the bushings almost immediately (big help) but still felt there was room for improvement. Heard about the bronze bushings PP sells, and the WEVO PSJ, and decided to take the plunge on the PSJ based on positive feedback here. This post is to share my experience and hopefully help WEVO sell more of this great product. But I digress!

I purchased my PSJ a few months ago, but when I went to install it, I found that my old conical screw holding my old coupler to the shift shaft of the 915 was stripped completely and frozen in place. Decided to put the PSJ away for another day.

That day came yesterday. I drilled out the old conical set screw and removed the stock coupler. Did not feel a lot of play in it (very stiff with hand pressure) so I thought "Meh, this PSJ may not do much. How much tighter can a new coupler be than that, and still work?"

When drilling, I went a bit far and ended up putting a divot in the tranny shift rod (not all bad as it gives a 'seat' to the screw) but lo and behold, the new set screw I had ordered from PP was too long! The threads would not engage the PSJ because of the length of the cone. Off to the grinder to cut the cone by about half. Now I have 1-2 threads biting, not a huge amount but I think it will be OK.

I get everything adjusted (fairly quickly actually) and go for a drive around the block. OK now - this is something! Shifting feels much more precise and mechanical. I like the positive feedback I'm getting from the shift knob, it feels much crisper than before and I can feel the metal engagement of the gears and synchros much better through the shift knob than ever before.

While I was out, I decided to try and move the shifting action forward (it felt a little too far back towards the tunnel for me) and ended up making reverse harder to get into. So I need to tweak it one more time before I close everything back up - but -- holy cow the PSJ made a difference! And this is to a fairly tight stock coupler with new shifter bushings!

I hammered straight and painted black my tunnel cover, added a Porsche logo decal to it (for fun, in case anyone lifts the carpet or whatever) and it will go back onto the car as soon as the adjustment is done.

As far as the neoprene boots, the one on the PSJ is fine and new of course, the bigger one that surrounds the entire assembly is old and cracked, and I'm thinking of getting another one - however I'm not in a big hurry as the PSJ has an integral dust boot that protects the bearing surfaces. I wish there was a boot made that did not require uncoupling the shift rod (maybe with a zipper or ziploc type fastener or something)

One hint, since the PSJ is round, grabbing it to turn it clockwise while you adjust the linkage is a bit more difficult than the stock coupler. I put my 4mm allen wrench into the set screw and used that as a handle to turn the PSJ.

Anyone thinking of buying a PSJ - they're pricey but worth it! Next up I think I'm going to do a WEVO shifter, based on the quality I see in this product. Cheers all and merry xmas!

Just put a Wevo shifter in today. Haven't driven it yet, but just running through the gears in the garage it feels great! Always a little nervous of the vagueness of the stock shifter, especially down shifting. Pretty notchy feeling now.
