Another wheel / tire / offset / backspacing question

Hi Guys -

I just sold my previous wheels and just purchased a set of the 52 Outlaw (Magnus Walker) wheels. My previous fronts would rub under hard cornering by where say the dead pedal would be (if that makes sense?). Here are the stats of the wheels I had:

Front:

• 17x9 with 5-5/16 backspacing
• 245/45 r17 tires
• Backspacing to offset conversion is et8

Rear:

• 17x11 with 5-1/2 backspacing
• 275/40 r17 tires
• Backspacing to offset conversion is et-13
• 22mm spacer

The new wheels are 17x9 et11 front and 17x11 et-8 rear. Because the front is inset 3mm I'm wondering if my rubbing will be worse and am considering going with a 235/45 tire instead. I was really hoping for the 245's for some added contact surface however these tires are almost 3/4 inch taller than original which could be causing the problem in the first place.

What are your thoughts? 245's with a 5 mm spacer up front? or 235's with no spacer?

Also a recommendation on a good street tire would be appreciated!

I think 235 section width tires are plenty on the front of a 911. Yes, the diameter will make a big difference in rubbing. I like the Bridgestone RE11.

This is a widebody, FWIW.

Why not 245/40/17, a much more common size and 24.7" OD?

Did you mean 17x9 up front, I assume? I doubt anyone is fitting 11Js up front...

Brent - I'd have to do a 245/40 up front with a 275/40 in the rear. Doesn't match OD wise. I dont see a front / rear tire combination that matches the 24.7 OD.

I ran 235/255 on one of my turbos. Worked fine, but my rear wheels were 10x17.

Sometimes stuffing the widest tire you can fit under a fender just slows the car down. My .02...

True- I don't worry about that much on a 2WD vehicle and have personally run differing OD tires before on other cars, but I understand if you don't want to/the tire shop won't allow it.

I agree that a 235/45 is enough tire up front if you want to be safe, though 235-275 is quite a stagger IMHO. You didn't mention the brand, either--obviously something like a Michelin usually runs "true" width, while say a Dunlop Z2 with very square sidewalls runs wide.

I was given a virtual crazy look when i told them what I had on the car (11" wheels with 5.5" backspacing and a 22mm spacer). I basically asked for a 17x11 wheel with et-33 for the rears. SC suspension with turbo flares.

Am I nuts or does this sound right?

Doing the math:

- 11" wide wheel means 12" from outer rim to outer rim
- et-33 oiffset translates into 1.3" off the centerline of the wheel
- so effectively that's (12"/2)-1.3" is the backspacing. So let's say 4.7".
- front of hub to the fender lip would then be (12"-4.7") OR (12"/2)+1.3" = 7.3 inches

If I go this aggressive with the offset I will assume that an upgrade to a 315 tire in the future will probably not work as with the 275's it was tight with the fender. Keep in mind it's only an SC and the biggest power upgrade I would ever do is a stock 3.6 which I don't think would need a 315 tire.

Just updating this for later users. I decided on the following and have been running this setup for 3 months without a problem.

Front
- 17x9 et8
- 245/40 17 tires
- no spacers
- I have more room in front for a wider tire with this setup

Rear
- 17x11 et -19
- 275/40 17 tires
- 12mm spacers
- pretty tight against the outer lip but no rubbing.

Scott, I run 245/45-17 on the front and 315/35-17 on the rear with no spacers. I roller the front fenders as I has a slight rub at full lock. My car is a middy with turbo flares.

- how much do these wheels weigh? I don't see anything on their website.

I wanted something different while nodding my head to the classic design.

I didn't weigh these before i mounted them. They were fairly light for their size but i don't have actuals.

Alright, fair enough. I am thinking of getting wider wheels for my non-flared 86 and I want to keep them looking original while making them as light as possible. Fuchs actually makes new wheels which aren't too dissimilar from these. I was just curious if there was a reason to pick one over the other.

Also, about your ducktail, is that something that fits over the current decklid, or is it an entirely new decklid with ducktail?

If you want to have light wheels, stick to 16" Fuchs.

I'd look at how wheels are made, to pick one over the other. Forged wheels would be preferable to cast wheels. The Fuchs company probably knows more about forging than any other wheel company.

Entirely new ducktail.

I second what Javadog said. I'd probably talk to Jeff Alton or Zuffenhaus (1 in the same?) about your desires and see what they have to say. I've dealt with Jeff before, always good to work with and very knowledgeable.

In the end I may end up with a set of Braid Fuch wheels for track duty but that'll be down the line once I address some other items.

Wow, that's the best-looking application of those outlaw rims I've seen. I'm not normally a fan but on that car in that finish and fitment wow!
