Help: Going nuts! WTB Metric Coupling / Extension Nuts
Please, please somebody tell me there have an answer...
I have updated my '77 911 dash. I decided to go with the minimal look, and as a result installed an Rennline aluminum lower dash cover. (like in picture below) It looks really sleek and clean. ![]() ![]() THEN - i also want to re-use my knee pads - very similar to setup in the same first picture. The problem i have is that the original bolt thread, at the back of the knee pad, is now not long enough to go through the Rennline cover AND the original dash fascia. As a result i cannot get a lock nut from behind to fasten the pieces. ![]() Knowing sweet blow-all about types of nuts, bolts etc - my research has led me to find what is called a "coupling nut". I then found out that (of course) the bolt on the back is a metric bolt...so after more research, looked on BoltDepot and got various sizes with corresponding extension rods and lock nuts. The smallest one: Metric coupling nuts, Zinc plated class 8.8 steel, 6mm x 1.0mm x 18mm seems to be still too big - so I am assuming that i need a 5mm or even still a 4mm. Im struggling to find one so small. Does anyone know where i can get such a small size? If not - are there any other alternative solutions to this conundrum??? Thanks in advance! |

I probably don't understand your fastening strategy. If the existing screw is too short, why not a longer screw? In lieu of this, how does the coupling nut allow all the pieces to clamp together?
Is it possible to pre-assemble the Rennline piece to the knee pad first, then that unit to the dash fascia? Sherwood |

Sounds like the coupling nut might cause problems fitting into small holes intended for the threaded part of the knee brace. You may be better off cutting the threaded bolt out of the knee brace with an X-Acto knife and epoxying a longer bolt into that piece.
