Snapped ariel

Broke the elec radio ariel this morning on a tree. I hate trees.

1. Does Pelican sell these (ariels- not trees) I searched, cant find.

2. Is this a DIY? From memory, the ariel drops out through the wheel arch, no? Any hints most welcome.

3. Least important, as I now to replace the unit, the current ariel goes up and down every time the ignition is activated (and radio is on), but annoyingly, also when CD is in use. Change CD, ariel goes down, then back up, when the new disc goes in. I would like one that goes up, stays up when radio is on, and down when CD is used. Issue with the player, not the ariel I assume, or does someone have a fix?

TIA

I'm not trying to do PP out of a sale but I bought one that mounts on the "fender " from Repco. Taiwanise rubbish, but cost next to nothing and the retract on switch off still goes after a number of years.

on a benz you can just replace the shaft. turn the radio on and pull the remains out. insert the new 'mast' and turn the radio off.done.( hirsham? )

you might look in to it.

Yep; that's how I did mine. Just replace the mast - the motor is good. Hirschman replacement mast - just be sure to measure the OD before ordering. There are at least two different sizes. I got the wrong one teh first time. They also have both chrome and black to suit.

Does the Hirschman part have something resembling a stylisied "h" or an upside down "y" on the top of the mast?

Yes. On the top "button" is a lower-case h with what appears to be flags flying from the top of the upright (or mountains in the background?). This is not a verification of authenticity, however, as some of the service and aftermarket masts have a smaller button on top with no insignia. My replacement mast for the MB didn't have the h. The one for the P-car did.

It does suggest tho that the unit is OEM and that, as you point out above, I can replace the broken mast without having to pull out the whole thing.

Thank you very much gentleman, have a virtual cold one on me.

Yeah, it's a "head unit" intelligence issue. The antenna only responds to the signal sent to it from the head unit - and goes up and down like a bloody yo yo! :-
Ignition on - it begins to erect,
Crank - back down it disappears,
Engine running - up it goes up again! ..........(sound familiar?)

But mine stays erected (the antenna!?!) with either the radio or CD playing - dumb! So I mounted a by pass switch in the dash, "in-line" to interrupt the head unit to antenna signal. If the radio is on - up goes the antenna, if i play a CD I push the bypass switch and down it goes and stays there!

btw, for $150. I replaced my old broken antenna with a black Hirschman complete. I tried buggerizing with the old one - pia!

Stuart.. let me know if you have any luck with el-cheapo antennas or replacement masts. I need one too. My "unit" is stuck in the flaccid position.

Merv! Good to see you're still around! All's well?

Adam, sorry to hear about your "flaccid" unit dude. Perhaps a visit to Spearmint Rhoni's is in order???

Yeh, all is well. Just not much time for the net these days. Wifey is now 35 weeks and counting

(BTW, was tailing this absolute PSYCHO in a dark blue Carrera the other week (St Kilda Rd). Weaving in/out of PEAK hour traffic and performing 45 DEGREE turns across TRAIN TRACKS!!! Must have been showing off his new R-Compound rubber

Damn antenna trouble. Mine (2 year old Beru) doesn't go up the full way unless pulled! Then when the ignition is turned off it winds down like normal........but keeps on going.........and going................and going. The motor just keeps turning so I've had to pull the fuse!

Porsche Crest Removal of the entie unit necessary?

Is removal of the entire unit of a non-automatic electric antenna necessary to replace a mast that no longer goes up and down...as if it is stripped inside? Is this an example of a replaceable mast? The motor keeps working, but the mast won't go up and down w/ the motor. I can move it manually...with resistance though!

Thanks for feedback.

Merv, that was nothing compared to your land speed record attempt into oncoming traffic.

Stuart, snap Ariel off at the base and replace with a wire coathangar bent into the shape of Australia. Classy.
