911 motor rebuild labor breakdown
Does anyone know what the typical billing hours are for a complete 911 motor rebuild. Also if possible, how do those hours breakdown? For example 3 hours to R&R motor etc?
Thanks in advance |

I have heard the number 40 bandied about.
On a related note how about a 915 tranny? How long would it take a DIYer to R&R a 915 tranny? |

Yeah, 40 is what I hear too, but I'd love to know what that breakdown is?

so if the average hourly rate is 70 an hour, that's 40 x 70 or $2800 in labor for a complete 911 motor rebuild....
now someone show me a shop that charges this much ![]() |

That's what Aase Motors in Fullerton charges for labor only. They do alot of the motors for cars in the POC and are pretty highly regarded.

45 here.
you can spend an honest 30 hours just doing a valve grind, so 40 for a complete doesn't seem quite enough.

The valve jobs 30 hours of labor is included in the 40-45 hours required to rebuild the motor? I thought that was on top of the 40 hours????

Here are Walt's prices for assembly. In my opinion, he's cheap on this:

I've always heard more like 50-60 hours for a proper rebuild.
When you're inspecting and measuring parts/clearances as you go, it definitely takes more time to do it right. Using the quoted $70/hr, that puts you in the neighborhood of $3500-4000 for the labor. Scary amount of money if you're doing it with a questionable engine builder... for sure. ![]()

I toss out the $2500 number for labor. This is what I tell people they can save by buying my book!

i wonder if walt's "assembly" labor is just that. all the parts laid out, cleaned and machined, and then assemble, or the whole chimichonga, including R+R, teardown, clean, machine, paint, assemble complete, install, get running good, test drives, etc. the periferals are often forgotten.
