What is in a 964RS motor?

In my quest for a 3.6 conversion I have come across a 964RS motor. Does anyone know the differences between the 964 and the 964RS motors?

I have been doing some research on this...www.instant-g.com will give you many answers.

M64/03 or 964 Carerra RS motor had 260 HP, with a lightweight flywheel and more impressive to me is 339.5 lb/ft @ 4800 rpm.

Bruce Anderson's book has a small section on these motors.

Eric,

The only Eur 964 RS or RSR were both 3.8 motors...that's where the street version gets 300 HP...while the racing versions were 340 HP for the RS and 350 for the RSR.

Just a little insight from the Bruce Anderson book.

Smitty,
Are ya sure.... I am pretty sure that the 92 Euro 964 RS was a 3.6 Ltr.. I'd bet my Life on it and I am not one to Gamble unless i know the outcome.. Ask Harald.... I like B.A. and all but i think he may be wrong. I think

The 3.6 engine from the 964 RS, has nothing special, apart from a lwt flywheel, and a single pulley setup.
Every engine goes on the dyno at the factory, and they would simply keep the better ones for the RSs.
I have seen so many rebult by my mechanic, and there is not one difference.

george,
But the mere weight loss of the RS couldn't be all it is.. Don't they have more Tourqe and higher Rev limit?

Eric...checked the engine vin guide, and no specific euro 964 RS motor in 1992...the M64/03 was the only RS motor at the time. I will check with Harald as well to make sure...you can never have enough sources.

Thanks for the insight. The motor came out of a 93 if that makes a difference. I do not know if it is a Euro motor yet. I'm just wondering if additional $ is worth it.

I would have to say yes.. in my humble opinion.. just for the pure and simple fact it is an original Euro RS 3.6 Ltr and there were not many Produced.. so that is cool plus .. and most importantly it should make your Black Bird Fly!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 260hp 964RS M64/O3 was available in 92 and 93. As George stated there is nothing special about them except the single pully, lightt f/w, and the selection from the extreme end of the bell curve. Cams, cr, pistons, DME, intake were the same as all other versions. You can get more power fromany normal version w/ a chip.

There was also an M64/04 350hp@6900, Carrrera RS w/ 6 individual throttle bodies and 3.8 liter displacement . The ebay engine is not that one.

Eric,
Harald sent me an email and stated the M64/03 was the only RS motors, and there were low production numbers.
He did say the engine would sell for over $9k though!

I sure hope you are not going to pay 1K over for a 964 engine because it came out of an RS. No difference.

George,
Would it cost me more to buy it out right having a bit more Torque and higer rev limit.. or to buy a standard 3.6 Ltr and but the parts to do the mods my self?

Eric,
Every engine is bench tested at the factory, and the best ones went in the RS. That doesn't mean the engines in the Carrera 2 and 4 were bad. There are definitely engines in 964 that are as good as those in the RS.
Money wise, you put a Cup exhaust tube, a lwt flywheel, and a single pulley, and you are at RS level, if not above. I doubt there is 1K in these mods.
The point is, selling a 964 engine for significantly more because it comes from a RS doesn't make sense.
