Taking apart a blown engine and have some questions.(open at your own risk scary pics

Take everything apart....it's a good experience. Take all the heads, rods, pistons and crank to a GOOD machine shop. Have them check measure and estimate repairs. Junk the junk and look for replacements as needed.

Oil pump is likely junk as is oil cooler. Save all the nuts and bolts.

Use the case as a door stop.....

Save all the studs that you can remove from the case. Waste not, want not.

It's really just hardware that's worth salvaging. Anything lubricated has been exposed to metal particles and is compromised. Cam gears can be saved. Pistons are risky without ultrasonic cleaning, heads would need ultrasonic and guides. The oil pump might be salvageable but would need to be gone through professionally. Remaining cylinders are good candidates for bore and replate. I window the cylinders in those areas anyway when boat-tailing a block.
Good luck and let me know if you want to sell the wasted case.

are they 3.2 heads? want to sell them as cores?

i had similar carnage when mine let go last year.. oiling problem at high speed coming onto the back straight at road atlanta big boom!

the engine surgery is fun, because its more like a post mortem dissection.... you get to see how it works and patient never has to wake up!! BINGO!
be careful removing the rings if they break they are extremely sharp!

Yes stock rod bolts. Was shifting from 2nd to 3rd at around 3500rpm. Wasn't a missed shift cause my car won't shift from 2nd to 1st without coming to a stop. Engine was running fine and had around 107k on it and was never opened. I think the rod bolt broke or the nut came loose. Haven't found those peices yet. Maybe inside the case.

Ok I split the case and found the rest of the debris inside the case. I believe it was the head of the bolt on the connecting rod that caused the blow up.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1455831161.jpg
Also after taking all the rods out I noticed that the blown up rod is different from all the others. Notice the numbers in the next picture. Weigh the rods, check bearings, mike the the rod journal. See if the specs are out of kilter.

The replacement could have been boogie rigged. I hope your crank is OK.

Yes patz I'm thinking the same thing. Unfortunately for me I was told it was all original never opened. Through records and car fax I'm the 3rd owner and the second only had it for 6 months and under 1k miles. I bought the car for the same price he paid so I don't think he did the engine work. I have records from the first owner going back to the early 90s. Nothing about engine work. I guess you never know.
