Visualising differences in wheel sizes

I was trying to decide whether to go for 8's or 9's on the rear of my 3.2 and couldnt really visualise the diffference even with the help of various charts and photo's... so... I knocked up a little program that output the following....

Helps me see the difference between 8's and 9's and how they will sit on the car.

Cool graphic. Showing the wheel center was a good extra.

Though, part of "the look" will depend on the tire size for a given rim. The 9's for example, with stock tires size, will stick out beyond the sidewall rub-strip. (read: curb grabber)

D'oh! . . Now, you need to do a graphic with the various size tires on the different width rims.

and just above, show the different wheel well arches, ie Narrow Body, Carerra, SC, Turbo, etc. I know a little much to ask.

The only problem with including any tire data is that tires of different models can have quite different profiles even if they are the same size.

Steve, you're absolutly right. It would also be difficult to nail down the fender clearance number. (esp in front. . . too much body variation)

My earlier point was about "the look." A 9" is going to be 1" bigger than an 8" ±1/10th (~?) The 245 tire size isn't going to vary enough between brands to fill that extra inch. Though it would be good to know just how much different the various brands measure.

The info to do the calculations is in the archives some where. Do a search, on Will Ferch, Bill Verburg, wheel size etc. there were several different discussions in the not too distant past.

How about adding a deep 6" and a 911R wheel. Then post it on the 911R thread.

My 9" 255/17's fill out my SC wheelwell perfectly--no mods to wheel lip/oil lines and such. Very aggressive looking without being obnoxiously huge. I would recommend something close to this size.

That's a good way to visualize what will happen. The inboard(chassis) side is on the left and the outboard side(curb) is on the right.

That's really cool! Isn't visualization great? Not only is it immediately clear why the R 7x15 is built the way it is (aligned outside thus no fender interference), but also why the "normal" 7x15 is so iffy (e.g. aligned inside thus requires flares).

This is great and will help future wheel upgraders immeasurably!! Now lets stretch the limits a bit 8x17(235/45) w/ +25mm o/s fits the front of an SC/carrera w/ lots of lip massaging but no innner fender issues. 9.5x17(275/40) +19mm o/s fits IFF oil lines are relocated and lips are massaged a bit
