Mystery O Ring on gearshifter rod

Hi am new to this site, so bear with me! I am restoring a g50 911 coupe 1987 model.Have found a loose O ring on the white nylon shaft, doesn't seem to be doing anything ,just hanging there on the white shaft. It is broken and doesn't look right ,and not on the parts list, should I bin it!!All gears are working OK. you can just see it in the centre of picture.

It's an o-ring that's used to seal the connection between the shifter pivot block (white thing) and the lower attachment point on the shifter lever. It's supposed to seal the joint between the plastic and the metal. It's more of a covering than an actual seal because the o-ring doesn't really get too compressed or pinched in between the two. It just sits there.

Your separated o-ring is #8 the picture below

The parts that most often fail on the G50 shifters is #2 and #10. So if you're going to take the shifter apart to replace the o-rings, i'd look at the ball cup bushing #10 and the shift rod guide bushing #2 and determine if those need replacement too. When either of these bushings crumble apart & fail, the shifter goes almost entirely dead and you can't select any gears

Hmm, I don't actually see the o-ring in the picture that you're referring to. There is an o-ring that holds the shift boot to the shaft. Perhaps that's what it is? My 87 didn't have one, so I'm sure it rotted off years ago. I just used a zip tie instead.

I'll find a pic in the PET.

Welcome by the way! Show us some pics!

Edit - I see Kevin beat me to it. I was thinking it was 23A in the pic above, but I think he's right.
