Tweeter install in Door Top, any one else seen this?

Hey Pelicans,

I was watching an older Chris Harris video of his Green ultimate build 911. Brilliant car! I would club a baby sea lion to own one. No, really. One detail he pointed out was the Tweeter install in the door top. WHAT!?! Thats a great idea! So I got a few spare moments today to take mine off. I can see how its possible, but difficult, to do.

Question here is: Has anyone else here done it?

Also: Do any companies sell fiberglass or Carbon fiber door tops I could hack up to make this happen?

I don't mind the idea of cutting a hole in my as factory delivered door panel, but my son might when he inherits the car eventually. Also that location should be better for imaging sound than a flat tweeter install in the door.

And as intoxicating as SSIs and a Dansk GT3 exhaust are, every now and then I like to music or talk radio.

I did it years ago with some Infinity Emit tweeters which are rectangular in shape. It wasn't hard, but I eventually abandoned that location and put bi amped coaxials in the kick panels, which is so much better since the distance from each ear to each kick panel is very close.

The human ear isn't as sensitive to height as it is to distance and having the tweeter that close to the one ear and having the midrange farther away is not ideal. The best sound would come from one point source on each side of the listener with each side being the same distance to the listener- very tough in an automobile, although the kick panels are a pretty good compromise.

Just an idea. Rather than mount tweeters inside the door top, how about surface mounting a small wedge shaped enclosure on the door top. About 25 years ago I had some small tweeters [I think they might have been Boston Acoustics] mounted in some pvc pipe enclosures [painted black] that the backs were cut at about a 45* angle. Only required 2 small screw holes, and a small hole for the wire. If you are creative, maybe even make a small metal bracket that clips them under the edge of the door top, so there would be no holes at all. Pretty decent sound imaging with the tweeters up high and facing towards you. Most of the time/phase discrepancy rwest was mentioning can be corrected with some DSP [digital signal processing] if you want to take it that far. It also might be a good way to try out that tweeter location to see if you like the sound, without committing to cutting up your door tops.

Weren't some cars equipped with separate mid woofers and tweeters as an option? My '87 has separate cutouts for the tweeters. It would be a lot easier to find replacement coaxial speakers than separates.

Yes the Hi-Fi option that was standard by 1989 is quite a bit better. I just replaced the 5.25 mid range/woffers with some Pioneer A series separates. The tweeters that came with the Pioneer separates were too small, but the factory tweeters and crossovers that are hidden behind the interior door handle were in great shape.

I have an 86 3,2 Carrera under restoration and was equally concerned as to how I would install tweeters in the door pads. I then located these Focal Tweeters and they installed without any metal cutting. Haven't connected them as yet but they were highly recommended.

I did this over 30 years ago. I aimed the tweeters across the car to the opposing passenger, so that the off-axis response would diminish the volume of the speaker closest to each passenger's ears. It worked well. The housings were made from aluminum and installed on the doors without cutting any holes. I still have the enclosures, might use them again some day, might sell them.

Start with 2 part component speakers with separate crossover units. Mount crossovers in front trunk with the amp. Ditch the tweeters that come with the original speakers, and get ready-to-mount little tweeters like this, and just make a little bracket to mount to the car body side, but inside where the door opens. The door opens away, but the tweeters stay with the dash on the body.




They sound great. Very directional and extra crispy.

I think I'll just keep my eyes open for a set of rough used door tops to experiment on in the classifieds.
